Manuel Herranz's curator insight, June 28, 8:10 AM

Kirti's fixation with DIY system is behind the times nowadays. Competition (from SDL to Kantan or Safaba talks about the many possibilities of having MT in-house and re-training loops). This is well beyond the basic DIY systems that flourished some years ago.

Nowadays the conversation moves from in-source to out-sourced machine translation, ie, whether the company is going to rely on external vendors or make its own solution grow. If your technology and offering are based on lock-ups, that is fine, but the translation market has suffered many similar experiences in the past. Small and large multilingual language vendors want a certain element of control whereby they will be free to add and customize on their own as their needs increase. And that is precisely want we have advocated at Pangeanic via our PangeaMT for years.

PhD student (doctoraatsbursaal), Ghent University, Confidence estimation of the MT output to reduce PE effort

wp - 100% - 2014/01/19 00:00:00 GMT+1 - LW22
Iulianna's insight:

" PhD sub-project focuses one specific aspect, viz. automatic confidence estimation of machine translation output to reduce post-editing effort. The goal of the PhD research project is three-fold: (1) develop a taxonomy of typical MT errors and create a data set in which MT and TM errors are manually annotated; (2) study the current post-editing effort by observing and analyzing how human translators actually post-edit; and (3) develop confidence metrics that can estimate a-priori the post-editing effort on the basis of the manually created data set."

This was a point that we demonstrated to TAUS in 2009 -- that even within the same domain sometimes it was useful to leave lower quality data out to get better quality engines. http://asiaonline.net/resources/reportID4523.aspx
