15+ Ways of Teaching Every Student to Code (Even Without a Computer) - Edutopia

15+ Ways of Teaching Every Student to Code (Even Without a Computer) - Edutopia | MSU's 21st Century Education Enterprise | Scoop.it

According to Code.org, 90 percent of U.S. schools are not teaching any computer science. Eyebrows have been raised this year as the U.K. passed a plan to educate every child how to code.

In my opinion, parents of every student in every school at every level should demand that all students be taught how to code. They don't need this skill because they'll all go into it as a career -- that isn't realistic -- but because it impacts every career in the 21st century world. Any country recognizing that will benefit in the long term. Here's how you can start.

Blocking access to YouTube creates dilemmas for schools | eSchool News | eSchool News | MSU's 21st Century Education Enterprise | Scoop.it

Blocking access to websites frustrates students and teachers--and often, it limits learning opportunities.

MSU_TCEE's insight:

As the article states, this isn't just an issue for this particular school or district, but for schools & districts nationwide.  It affects the use of sites like YouTube, Google, even TedTalks - I've seen some designated education sites blocked.  Especially where a district is implementing 1:1, how do you justify blocking?  It creates frustration for students and teachers - and can take a teacher who is on the fence about implementing appropriate use of technology in her class quickly to the side of those against.

Has anyone found a productive work around for this issue?

A higher-order thinker is a critical thinker. What are the attributes of a critical thinker? In The Miniature Guide to Critical Thinking Concepts and Tools, Richard Paul and Linda Elder describe a well-cultivated critical thinker as someone who:

raises vital questions and problems, formulating them clearly and precisely;gathers and assesses relevant information, using abstract ideas to interpret it effectively; comes to well-reasoned conclusions and solutions, testing them against relevant criteria and standards;thinks open-mindedly within alternative systems of thought, recognizing and assessing their assumptions, implications and practical consequences as need be; andcommunicates effectively with others in figuring out solutions to complex problems.
