::sigh::

This is very upsetting to me. Not only as a Geography student but also as a future teacher. It is sad that in this 2014 technology driven, google everything age that simple mistakes like these can be made and then left unattended to. This Buzzfeed article shows one to many adults that need to retake a geography class or at least look at a map that has been proofread by someone with some credibility.

This main image speak volumes NO CNN Hong Kong is not in South America. My only hope is that someone in a control room at this station quickly clarified this silly "mix up". My other hope, if I may get two is that no children saw this and now believed that China somehow found it's way to where Brazil "was".

Yet another resource to add to my "this is why we take map quizzes" lecture at the beginning of the semester!!

I like the 'not that hard, though' tag.

Discovery and Exploration

Discovery and Exploration | Mrs. Watson's Class | Scoop.it

I have a longstanding obsession with J.R.R. Tolkien’s 'The Hobbit,' starting with the great 1977 animated film that captured my young imagination.  Hobbits are content to be intensely local and ignore the world beyond their neighborhood until Gandalf instills in Bilbo and subsequently Frodo to learn about the wider world.  I’ve always seen that as push for all of us to get to know more about the world, and to experience it first-hand.  Sometimes academic geography forgets the explorer component of geographic inquiry and discovery; it is these types geographic quotes from the movies and books that I wish to share.

Nancy Watson's insight:

Even movies like THE HOBBIT have geographic elements. No we cannot see it in class, but you can watch it at home or in the theater.

I liked how in this video it gave the viewer a preview of what you will learn in AP Human Geography. When I signed up for this class i thought I was going to have to memorize every country, its location and capital. This video let me really know what I was going to learn over this year.

Why is Geo-literacy Important?

Geographic content, spatial analysis and decision-making skills are vital and this video succinctly explains it's important within our educational system.  I know, I'm preaching to the choir, but please share this video to promote geo-literacy.

Just another prime example of American ignorance. We're all guilty! But to what extent is this our fault and to what extent is it what we're taught at a young age in school.

The Rhode Island Geography Education Alliance seeks to promote geo-literacy here in the Ocean State.  So what is geo-literacy? The National Geographic Society’s Educational team...

As the Alliance Coordinator for the state of Rhode Island, I organized  these three videos (two from National Geographic) and some pictures to provide a basis for understanding what geo-literacy is and why it is important for society and within the workforce.  In the spirit of sharing, I thought I'd share these links beyond the borders of Rhode Island.

What is Geo-literacy?

Geo-literacy extends far beyond knowing where places are on a map.  National Geographic Education has put an emphasis on geoliteracy, which entails spatial thinking skills and understanding systems in addition to content knowledge about locations and places.

Geo literacy explained to all people that don't know I Teacher Much more than just places...

Seth Dixon's curator insight, November 1, 2013 10:32 AM

Geo-literacy extends far beyond knowing where places are on a map.  National Geographic Education has put an emphasis on geo-literacy, which entails spatial thinking skills and understanding systems in addition to content knowledge about locations and places.

Kyle Kampe's curator insight, May 28, 2014 11:09 PM

In AP Human Geo., this relates to the concepts of geo-literacy and spatial perspective because it indicates that for a population to be knowledgeable about geography, it must go above the mere rote memorization of toponyms and instead explore the spatial characteristics of places.
