The Digital Down Low: Some critical questions about iPads and 1-1 learning

The Digital Down Low: Some critical questions about iPads and 1-1 learning | mrpbps iDevices | Scoop.it

"Over the past 18 months I’ve visited ‘iPad’ schools, attended a range of iPads in schools workshops, and participated in online conversations of all forms regarding this platform. Conversations tend to center around apps, how the devices are going to be insured, the ‘best’ apps for for _________ purpose, etc. Most of what I’ve seen and heard described are learning experiences that could easily be done with less expensive technologies, including a piece of paper and a pencil. The focus of these conversations leaves me feeling a bit empty and filled with questions about whether or not this approach is doing right by the kids we serve.

Here are some questions I have for anyone in the edtech community that has taken their school down the path of 1-1 learning with iPads:"

iPads do not have magic learning dust coming out of the back vent | mrpbps iDevices | Scoop.it

“The iPad is just a neat tablet computer, it does not have magic learning dust coming out of the back vent” was a tweet I sent yesterday and which I wanted to follow up with a more substantive post. Being an avid twitter kind-of person, I read quite a few tweets about the iPad in education and teachers eager to introduce these to their classrooms, and it was one of these which pushed me into the mini-rant you see encapsulated above.

A Paintbrush That Works On The iPad

A Paintbrush That Works On The iPad | mrpbps iDevices | Scoop.it

"The iPad has one of the sharpest, most responsive touch screens on the planet, and its art apps are incredible. They’re like blank canvases with Photoshop powering the backend. Mistakes can be made and fixed. Experimentations are a filter away. Art is malleable at a whole new tactile level.

“All this magic and still we are expected to finger paint,” writes the team from Artist Hardware. They’re a long-standing art company responsible for some of the most popular paint brushes on the market today. And they recently fundraised a new project on Kickstarter. It’s called the Sensu, and it’s a “paintbrush” that works on the iPad’s capacitive screen. It goes on sale this May for $40.
