e is for book: iBooks Author: Links to resources (so far) | mrpbps iDevices | Scoop.it

"If you are interested in making ebooks, you've probably already heard about Apple's new iBook creation tool, iBooks Author. To clear up one bit of confusion, iBooks Author is a Mac app (for desktop or laptop computer) to make an interactive iBook that is read in the iBooks 2 app on the iPad. In other words, you're not making the iBook on your iPad, unlike Book Creator, for example, which makes a standard iBook. (Here is my post about using Book Creator.)"

"How many 7th Graders can say they best selling authors? Well this group of kids from Woodlawn Beach Middle School in Northern Florida can thanks to their teacher Andrea Santilli and iBooks Author.
Ms. Santilli, a self-professed “die-hard Mac girl”, was looking for a new way to not only challenge her Advanced Life Sciences class, but also leverage technology to make learning fun. Not to mention get some practical experience in the real world of writing, photography, video, and ebook publishing. Toolbox: e5 iPad Apps

Toolbox: e5 iPad Apps | mrpbps iDevices | Scoop.it

"The Victorian DEECD (Dept of Education and Early Childhood Development) recently introduced its e5 Instructional Model into schools and VSC has been trialling it for the past 12 months. My question became: How could I support teachers to implement the e5 Instructional Model via the iPad Program? Was it possible to create a chart that would be easy to use and could provide apps suitable for each of the facets of e5? I decided to take the DEECD up on their invitation to:

… engage with the e5 Instructional Model as a framework for defining what high quality instruction looks like in the Victorian government education system.

And here is what I’ve come up with ......."

Evaluating Apps with Transformative Use of the iPad in Mind

Evaluating Apps with Transformative Use of the iPad in Mind | mrpbps iDevices | Scoop.it

"The app development market is exploding. More and more companies are creating “educational apps”. In some cases, they are simply digital versions of a book or a web based tool. Some seem to have “no educational value” to it at all, but are still sold under the label of “education”. Although, I usually don’t resort to borderline cuss words, I really liked the expression of “crapware”, Sarah Perez over at TechCrunch used when she was reviewing a new app for the Pre-School/Kindergarten crowd."

"Subtext is an intriguing iPad application that allows users to read books collaboratively. While reading, participants can insert text, emotions, questions, links and thoughts into the margins of the book. When other readers jump into the text they can see the notations and reply to the existing thoughts in a discussion thread that is neatly tucked away into the margins of the text."

A Friendly Guide to Deploying iPads at Your School

A Friendly Guide to Deploying iPads at Your School | mrpbps iDevices | Scoop.it

I am the technology coordinator at The Scholars’ Academy, a public school in New York City. This year, we piloted a one-to-one iPad program in the seventh grade. We also have several smaller deployments—including two class sets in the eighth grade, a half-class set for each department in the high school, and a iPad for each teacher. Next year, we’re doubling down and expanding our pilot to include one-to-one iPads in the eighth grade and an increased deployment in the high school. For the sake of brevity and due to fact that the New York City Department of Education haven’t worked out a process for purchasing apps, I’m going only going to cover basic setup and the installation of free apps. In addition, I will be completely ignoring the Assign tab as it requires that you have a Mac OS X Lion Server in place and configured. I do, but many do not.

Monster Physics is fun for any age

Monster Physics is fun for any age | mrpbps iDevices | Scoop.it

"This universal iOS app comes from the "Gee, I wish I had this when I was a kid" category. Monster Physics teaches science, but in a fun way. You create your avatar then assemble a contraption from pieces available in the app. Wheels, cannons and all sorts of parts. You can weld things together and make moving joints. There are 68 items that can be used to make your gadget.

Then your creation gets rendered, and the true laws of physics will apply. Will the object roll smoothly, fly like an airplane or make a space flight? Several of my designs failed, and that is where the learning takes place. After awhile I was literally flying high."

10 Fun Apps + Games to Stimulate Your Creativity

10 Fun Apps + Games to Stimulate Your Creativity | mrpbps iDevices | Scoop.it

"As a child of the 80's, predating the wide use of the internet, my options for staying creative were limited and very rarely involved technology. A sheet of paper and a pencil or perhaps a tambourine would suffice for that underlying urge to create. Nowadays, while paper, pencils, and tambourines aren't fully extinct, there are endless alternatives to quenching that artistic thirst that lies deep within many of us. With countless apps and games right in the palm of our hands, it's far more convenient to spark artistic inspiration all while having fun. Today, we bring you ten of the most entertaining apps and games on the market to creatively stimulate you and fill that artistic void in your daily life."

App Store - WatchKnow Educational Videos

WatchKnow Educational Videos is a companion app to the www.WatchKnow.org website which provides free educational videos for teachers, students, parents, and homeschoolers teaching students in K—12 (USA) or ages 3—18 (international).

The videos are reviewed and approved by teachers for teachers (Kid Safe!) and are placed in 3,000 different categories using a “super” directory with multiple subdirectories. Our Web site is organized as a wiki so teachers and educators can participate in the organization and growth of the WatchKnow video library. Our users have the ability to rate all videos (using a 5-star method) with the result that the best videos are shown first in the list of over 20,000 educational videos. Our teacher-editors also modify video titles and descriptions so relevant videos can be found quickly, tag the videos with an age rating, and indicate the original source of the video.

Deploying iPads in schools

Deploying iPads in schools | mrpbps iDevices | Scoop.it

"As well as working as a journalist, I have the privilege of being the IT manager at a middle-sized independent school in Melbourne. The school takes children from three-year-old kindergarten all the way to Year 12. Students come from a wide variety of cultural back- grounds with a significant intake of overseas students.

Last year, we started the process of evaluating a number of different computing platforms and types of hardware as part of a review into the school’s technology strategy."
