Why Apple's new Device Enrollment Program is a game changer for IT

Why Apple's new Device Enrollment Program is a game changer for IT | mrpbps iDevices | Scoop.it
Apple's Device Enrollment Program is a major advance for iOS devices in enterprise and education. It gives IT the ability to thoroughly configure, deploy, and manage devices without needing to ever see or handle them. Here's all the details on why this is Apple's biggest play for the enterprise market to date.
John Pearce's insight:

No longer being in a school I've not had to deal with the vagaries of mass iPad deployment but a quick read of this suggests that the DEP is important.

How to use Siri for iPhone and iPad: The ultimate guide

How to use Siri for iPhone and iPad: The ultimate guide | mrpbps iDevices | Scoop.it
Everything you need to know about setting up and using Siri on your iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad! Siri is the name of Apple's personal digital assistant. It's basically voice control that talks back to you, that understands relationships and context, and with a personality straight out of Pixar. Ask Siri questions, or ask Siri to do things for you, just like you would ask a real...
John Pearce's insight:

Like lots of manuals or Ultimate Lists, there's arguably way too much information in this guide which means that there is a lot of redundancy in this post. Nonetheless it does have a useful lists of contents so if you get the time to check through it this article could be a useful reference, (at least until the next iOS update).

Loopy, the live looper app for iPhone and iPad

Loopy, the live looper app for iPhone and iPad | mrpbps iDevices | Scoop.it
Loopy, the sophisticated, tactile live looper app that reinvents iPhone and iPad music making. Layer up to 12 loops with overdub, stereo, count-in, variable tempo, import/export, and full MIDI clock and control support.
John Pearce's insight:

Having heard the Melbourne based developer of the Loopy app interviewed on local 774 radio https://soundcloud.com/774-abc-melbourne/loopy-the-tonight-show-performance  and checking the YouTube link from the Jimmy Fallon Show featuring Billy Joel and the Loopy App, ( and especially as the HD iPad app is on sale for half price), I just had to grab a copy. After a quick play I can see that I am going to be "wasting" a lot of time "going loopy". This is a must have app for anyone musically inclined and I can see it really taking off in classrooms.

Printeer - a 3D printer for kids & schools | mrpbps iDevices | Scoop.it
Design and 3D print your own creations using an iPad. A delightful 3D printing experience for children and K-12 education.
John Pearce's insight:

There are a steadily increasing number of 3D printers coming onto the market and it is really hard to keep up with the way they are developing. The Printeer stands out for a couple of reasons, one because of the student centred design, two because of the integration with iPads and thirdly because according to the developers users don't need to know or use CAD design programs or the like. Exciting stuff.

OPINION: Why We Are Misunderstanding the Chromebook iPad Debate (EdSurge News)

OPINION: Why We Are Misunderstanding the Chromebook iPad Debate (EdSurge News) | mrpbps iDevices | Scoop.it

"Stop me if you have heard this argument before. We have decided to buy Chromebooks for our students because they do 90% of what students can do on a typical computer at 1/3 the cost."

John Pearce's insight:

An interesting look at the iPad-Chromebook dichotomy. Though the article is very much focussed on the advantages of iPads, (maybe it should be tablet in general), it does have some useful suggestions on how iPads can be used. Perhaps a more rounded piece might lead to a conclusion that a classroom in which students can access a range of tools which best suit purpose is in the end the best situation of all.

IKEA HACK: articulating tablet mount

IKEA HACK: articulating tablet mount | mrpbps iDevices | Scoop.it

"Browsing on a tablet is great; there's nothing like digging into your favorite site while getting comfy. I find the longer I browser the more supine my posture, eventually my pose self-levels to lethargic mass lying on my back with the tablet above my face, making my arms tired. It would be great if I could combine my thirst for Internet and laziness so I can nerd out online while on my back. So I hacked an IKEA desk lamp into a tablet mount for bed time browsing."

John Pearce's insight:

This is a neat idea which could be used for a whole range of activities besides reading in a "supine position". A similar mount could be used to Airplay demonstrations, hold your device for Facetime, capturing stop motion or other movies....... Thanks to @rgesthuizen

Smartphones: The Silent Killer Of The Web As You Know It

Smartphones: The Silent Killer Of The Web As You Know It | mrpbps iDevices | Scoop.it
The PC is dying, long live the PC! These headlines have been thrown around for years, as sales of laptops and desktops have continually dwindled downward.
John Pearce's insight:

That Smartphones are really eating into PC and laptop sales is not at all surprising given a range of reasons eg portability, connectivity, multi-functionality and more. What is more interesting is that tablets have "hit the wall" in terms of growth. It's interesting to ponder the reasons for this and the divide between younger generations and older users who prefer the architecture of the larger screens. The blurring of the distinction between phones and tablets is maybe a product of this.

The Ultimate Guide to Freeing Up Space on Your iPhone in iOS 7

The Ultimate Guide to Freeing Up Space on Your iPhone in iOS 7 | mrpbps iDevices | Scoop.it
Running out of storage space on your iPhone is annoying, but trying to free some up is downright aggravating. Until they figure out a way to throw a terabyte of flash memory in there, you're going to have to do some spring cleaning every now and then. The biggest storage hogs are usually photos and videos, but there's also the infamous other, which can claim up to 10 GB of space if you're not careful. Deleting a few pictures and movies might help you out of a jam, but if you're continually getting that "not enough available storage" warning, you've got to dig deeper. How to Free Up Storage
John Pearce's insight:

This is certainly an extensive list of things you can do to free up space including lots of tips on removing content from your device. It's worthwhile as a reminder of how many different things can affect performance.

Do Teachers Need iPad Training? - Edudemic

Do Teachers Need iPad Training? - Edudemic | mrpbps iDevices | Scoop.it
We have come to a point in the education technology journey where it seems rather dull to still be asking if the iPad is the right device for the classroom. The answer, in case you’ve missed the last few years of debate is that it is a great option, but this is not universally accepted …
John Pearce's insight:

This article makes the oft acknowledged, (but too rarely acted upon), need for teacher professional development when looking to integrate technology in the classroom. Better still it makes the point that such PD needs to be personalised and enabled over an extended period of time rather than the one-off catch-all too often provided.

iPads, Games and BYOD

iPads, Games and BYOD | mrpbps iDevices | Scoop.it

After a successful iPad trial at school last year, the teachers all agreed it was working really well.  So this year we asked our year 5 and 6 students to bring an iPad to school and I've been work...

John Pearce's insight:

Chris Betcher has written a great reflective post on how iPads have been introduced and used at his school. Unlike many other similar posts Chris focusses on the creative aspect of their implementation. It's also interesting to read about the place that games play in this and how the school deals with the issues around this. I particularly like the advice to parents “it’s your house, your child, your iPad, your rules” and that where app discovery goes, "the students are taking the lead here and discovering useful tools that we teachers may not.

John Pearce's insight:

As a Reading Recovery teacher in a former life this app is more than a substitution for the pencil and paper iteration. On a quick tryout it seemed to do what it claims with a minimum of fuss. Of course it would be better if the multiple records could be stored and further codified. The developers have thought of this and actually offer this capability in another pay-for app in Levelbook | Running Record Stopwatch Calculator Grade Book, which contains the Stopwatch Recorder app. The latter can be found at http://bit.ly/1sxTgtT ; and costs $6.49 in the Australian app store.

You always have to treat any suggestion of future obsolescence with a degree of reserve however when it is Steve Jobs speaking of his own products then you tend to make more notice. This article from Cult of Mac fits the narrative however. It's another pointer to how "the cloud" is changing how we can operate.

A new iOS app called FireChat is blowing up in the App Store. But it's not the app itself that's causing such a stir; it's the underlying networking technology it taps into.
John Pearce's insight:

It's a bit hard to imagine a world without having to rely on or choose how your mobile device connects. Multipeer Connectivity offers the opportunity to connect regardless "of whether you have an actual Wi-Fi or cellular connection."

Whilst Firechat http://goo.gl/agbKqv my not be the ultimate use of this capability, it does point the way to how these new "mesh networks" may develop.
