Cool Tools for 21st Century Learners: 14 Resources for AppSmashing with ThingLink

Cool Tools for 21st Century Learners: 14 Resources for AppSmashing with ThingLink | mrpbps iDevices | Scoop.it
In November I launched the ThingLink AppSmash Challenge to encourage educators to share great ways to combine two or more apps together to create, publish and share content using ThingLink as a presentation tool. The goal of the challenge was to create resources to help educators discover new possibilities for teaching and learning with an iPad to better meet our teaching and learning needs.

Via John Evans
John Pearce's insight:

Thinglink is one of my favorite apps. Susan Oxnevad is another fan who put out this challenge to other educators to share how they use Thinglink as part of an 'AppSmash'. Here's the results of these endeavours.

Project Based Learning

Project Based Learning | mrpbps iDevices | Scoop.it
In project based learning students are driven to learn content and skills for an authentic purpose. PBL involves students in explaining their answers to real-life questions, problems, or challenges. It starts with a driving question that leads to inquiry and investigation. Students work to create a product or presentation as their response to the driving question.

Technology can be helpful throughout a project, whether students use iPads, Chromebooks, Android tablets, laptops, or desktops. I've written a primer for each of the three major components of project based learning. I share useful websites and apps as I tell you about my take on project based learning.
John Pearce's insight:

Tony Vincent is just an all round nice guy who really knows his stuff. When he prepares content you know that not only is it extensively researched but that it grounded in theory. In this series of three quite extensive posts Tony tackles Project Based Learning from three perspectives, Crafting Questions, Investigating Authentic Questions and Creating Products to Show and Share Learning. In this case he also goes beyond his mobile focus to include Chromebooks and other technologies. This series is a must read for anyone wanting to 'get into PBL'.

Cheap Chromebooks teach Apple a lesson: Price matters | Cult of Android

Cheap Chromebooks teach Apple a lesson: Price matters | Cult of Android | mrpbps iDevices | Scoop.it
For the first time ever, Google has passed Apple in the U.S. education market, according to IDC data obtained by The Financial Times, which shows Google’s Chromebook laptops are more popular now in the K-12 classrooms than the iPad.
John Pearce's insight:

These are interesting findings about which we shouldn't be surprised because once the "me first" factor is no longer in play then economics or "bang for your buck" is too often the driver of education based purchasing. Suffice to say I'm not attracted to either and would rather see a classroom with a mix of options preferably under a BYO structure whether it be device, technology or browser.

St. Stephen’s Episcopal Day School hosted Miami Device, a conference held  on their campus November 6 & 7, 2014. Many generous presenters have shared their session resources, notes, and handouts. Let's take a look!

John Pearce's insight:

Tony Vincent is not only a great presenter who's sharing is legend, but he's also an astute curator who knows quality when he sees it. In this post he brings together not only his reflections on the recent Miami Device Conference but also a listing of the public resources, notes and handouts shared by other conference presenters. It's pleasing to see a number of quality Aussie presenters on the program. Check out the links to see what other educators are doing.

You Can Now Create Your Classroom Website on iPad for Free ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning

You Can Now Create Your Classroom Website on iPad for Free ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning | mrpbps iDevices | Scoop.it
Weebly, the popular website creation platform, has now a powerful app that works on iPad. Besides Google Sites, Weebly is one of the best free web tools I have been recommending for teachers to use for creating classroom websites and students portfolios. Weebly has a very simply and easy to use editor that allows you to create your website within a couple of minutes. You can simply drag and drop different elements into your template and add your content and share your website with the world. I have already written a couple of guides on Weebly which you can check from the links below:

This is really neat as Weebly is a really useful and appealing option for students to create websites.

SNAP! 6 - The Easiest Way To SNAP A SHOT With Your iPhone 6

SNAP! 6 - The Easiest Way To SNAP A SHOT With Your iPhone 6 | mrpbps iDevices | Scoop.it
An iPhone 6 case with an actual shutter button & interchangeable lenses that make photo-taking easy, fun and professional.
John Pearce's insight:

This case looks to be a real advance on some of the other offerings in the marketplace and with the strap, shutter button and an expanding range of lens. The shutter button alone should guarantee that users will take their shots in the right plane at least. At first glance $140 for the complete kit the Snap 6 is relatively expensive. However given that you are also purchasing a case and strap as well as an app interface, perhaps the price is not quite so bad. Now that the $80,000 stretch goal has been reached it would appear that the iPhone 6 Plus case will be added to the range.

How to Use iOS 8’s Photos Extensions - The Mac Observer

How to Use iOS 8’s Photos Extensions - The Mac Observer | mrpbps iDevices | Scoop.it
iOS 8 Extensions open the door for iPhone and iPad apps to share data and features, and that creates new potential for Apple's own Photos app and image editing. Third party image editing apps can now share their filters with the Photos app, but you need to know how to enable them first - which is fairly easy to do.
John Pearce's insight:

When you look at it, this capability does make sense though again every time we enable this interconnectivity we also enable another opportunity for breakage, and breakins.

Your Devices Broadcast Unique Numbers, and They’re Being Used to Track You

Your Devices Broadcast Unique Numbers, and They’re Being Used to Track You | mrpbps iDevices | Scoop.it
Your smartphone — and other devices that use Wi-Fi — broadcast a unique number when they search for nearby Wi-Fi networks. A device’s unique MAC address is sent along with “probe requests” that search for nearby Wi-Fi networks.

This tracking problem isn’t just theoretical. Advertisers in London used Wi-Fi-enabled garbage cans to track people’s movements around the city. The Wi-Fi specification wasn’t designed for a world where people carried Wi-Fi-scanning devices in their pockets all day long.
John Pearce's insight:

This is a really interesting development and one which no doubt other smartphone and tablet makers will emulate. Whilst it does offer something of a kickback against location tracking many of us are giving up similar information through the choices we make regarding location services and app selection.

Google Apps for iPad Users - Summit Resources

Google Apps for iPad Users - Summit Resources | mrpbps iDevices | Scoop.it
Lots of people were turning up at Google Summit workshops with an iPad, only to be disappointed that many things that work on a computer either don't work at all on an iPad, or work very differently.

Although they have many advantages, its useful to remember that an iPad is not the same as a conventional computer. Many of the things that one can do on a laptop are definitely not the same experience on an iPad. It can be a little frustrating!

Google tools have typically been designed to run in a web browser and aim to be device-agnostic, but that ideal does not always translate well into an iPad experience.  The best experience on an iPad is when you use purpose built apps, and with the right apps it is quite possible to live comfortably in a Google world on an iPad.
John Pearce's insight:

My friend and colleague Chris Betcher is an inveterate sharer. He's also a regular presenter at Google Summits and other events around the country and beyond. At his school the students use iPads within the classroom. This heady mix means that Chris writes from authentic personal knowledge and experience. In this post, (part of a much more extensive site focussed on things Google. If you're looking for tips on how to best use Google tools on your iPad then this post is a great summary.

How to reclaim storage space on your iPad

How to reclaim storage space on your iPad | mrpbps iDevices | Scoop.it
If you’re running low on storage space on your iPhone or iPad, you may think you just have too many apps installed, or that your music collection is getting out of hand. But that may not be the case entirely. Instead, there might be a heap of hidden files that are taking up space on your iOS device. They’re not as easy to get rid of like apps are, but there are ways to free up this space.

When you plug in your iOS device to your computer and open up iTunes you can see what exactly is taking up space on your iPhone or iPad. You can also see the different categories the used memory is under, such as Apps, Games, Music, Movies, TV Shows and a mysterious category known as “Other.”
John Pearce's insight:

Michelle Berner is a great Australian educator who has developed a on-going range of excellent resources specifically for users of iPhones and/or iPads. Whilst her primary audience are students of U3A, (University of the Third Age), her resources are just as useful for all users. In this case Michelle demystifies and shows how to remove content from the "Other" category on your device.
