Put Your iPhone To Work With IFTTT

Put Your iPhone To Work With IFTTT | mrpbps iDevices | Scoop.it
IFTTT is an acronym for “If This, Then That” and it’s pronounced like the latter part of the word “gift”. The service promises to put the web to work for you, using a system of triggers and actions to automate a huge range of actions.
John Pearce's insight:

IFTTT is a great service that automates a whole range of operations simply, working with on your iDevice adds further utility to both.

John Pearce's insight:

It's great to see that Scratch, one of the more enduring and accessible coding application is no available for iOS, (and soon Android). ScratchJr is aimed at the 5-7 age group and like the online version is free. Though I haven't tried this particular iteration of Scratch, the pedigree suggests that this app should be on all school based iOS devices, especially in light of curriculum moves for the inclusion of coding and computational thinking.

8 Ways to Show Your iPad on a Projector Screen

8 Ways to Show Your iPad on a Projector Screen | mrpbps iDevices | Scoop.it

Teachers really like the ability to display their iPad or their students'
iPads on a projector screen. Projecting on a large screen is great for  demonstrations, simulations, explanations, and showing examples. There are  several ways this can be done in the classroom. Read the post for more information and for a handy chart.

John Pearce's insight:

Though the main players still work more than adequately for displaying your iPad, this article from Tony Vincent contains information about a couple of newer entrants. The comparison chart is a great aide for schools looking to begin using display technology.

Do Teachers Need iPad Training? - Edudemic

Do Teachers Need iPad Training? - Edudemic | mrpbps iDevices | Scoop.it
We have come to a point in the education technology journey where it seems rather dull to still be asking if the iPad is the right device for the classroom. The answer, in case you’ve missed the last few years of debate is that it is a great option, but this is not universally accepted …
John Pearce's insight:

This article makes the oft acknowledged, (but too rarely acted upon), need for teacher professional development when looking to integrate technology in the classroom. Better still it makes the point that such PD needs to be personalised and enabled over an extended period of time rather than the one-off catch-all too often provided.

iPads, Games and BYOD

iPads, Games and BYOD | mrpbps iDevices | Scoop.it

After a successful iPad trial at school last year, the teachers all agreed it was working really well.  So this year we asked our year 5 and 6 students to bring an iPad to school and I've been work...

John Pearce's insight:

Chris Betcher has written a great reflective post on how iPads have been introduced and used at his school. Unlike many other similar posts Chris focusses on the creative aspect of their implementation. It's also interesting to read about the place that games play in this and how the school deals with the issues around this. I particularly like the advice to parents “it’s your house, your child, your iPad, your rules” and that where app discovery goes, "the students are taking the lead here and discovering useful tools that we teachers may not.

Get Running Record Calculator | Stopwatch Recorder on the App Store. See screenshots and ratings, and read customer reviews.
John Pearce's insight:

As a Reading Recovery teacher in a former life this app is more than a substitution for the pencil and paper iteration. On a quick tryout it seemed to do what it claims with a minimum of fuss. Of course it would be better if the multiple records could be stored and further codified. The developers have thought of this and actually offer this capability in another pay-for app in Levelbook | Running Record Stopwatch Calculator Grade Book, which contains the Stopwatch Recorder app. The latter can be found at http://bit.ly/1sxTgtT ; and costs $6.49 in the Australian app store.

With iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite, Apple finally shows us how we'll compute in the future. Here's a look at our pristine computing destiny.
John Pearce's insight:

You always have to treat any suggestion of future obsolescence with a degree of reserve however when it is Steve Jobs speaking of his own products then you tend to make more notice. This article from Cult of Mac fits the narrative however. It's another pointer to how "the cloud" is changing how we can operate.

This Little-Known iOS Feature Will Change the Way We Connect | Gadget Lab | WIRED | mrpbps iDevices | Scoop.it
A new iOS app called FireChat is blowing up in the App Store. But it's not the app itself that's causing such a stir; it's the underlying networking technology it taps into.
John Pearce's insight:

It's a bit hard to imagine a world without having to rely on or choose how your mobile device connects. Multipeer Connectivity offers the opportunity to connect regardless "of whether you have an actual Wi-Fi or cellular connection."

Whilst Firechat http://goo.gl/agbKqv my not be the ultimate use of this capability, it does point the way to how these new "mesh networks" may develop.

5 Lessons Drawn from the LAUSD iPad Fiasco | mrpbps iDevices | Scoop.it
It’s becoming difficult to read the news in Los Angeles these days without running across yet another article about the problems faced by the sputtering LAUS…
John Pearce's insight:

Sam Gliksman offers a clear and rational reflection on an event that is fast becoming a cause celebre around iPads but for which you could just as easily substitute the word iPad with Chromebook, Surface or almost any other device. Though it should be apparent from the plethora of internet connected devices available today, mass adoption of any one technology, especially when connected so intimately with an education conglomerate, is bound to be fraught. Gliksman makes some important suggestions on principles which should guide such decision making.

Loopy, the sophisticated, tactile live looper app that reinvents iPhone and iPad music making. Layer up to 12 loops with overdub, stereo, count-in, variable tempo, import/export, and full MIDI clock and control support.

Having heard the Melbourne based developer of the Loopy app interviewed on local 774 radio https://soundcloud.com/774-abc-melbourne/loopy-the-tonight-show-performance  and checking the YouTube link from the Jimmy Fallon Show featuring Billy Joel and the Loopy App, ( and especially as the HD iPad app is on sale for half price), I just had to grab a copy. After a quick play I can see that I am going to be "wasting" a lot of time "going loopy". This is a must have app for anyone musically inclined and I can see it really taking off in classrooms.

John Pearce's insight:

There are a steadily increasing number of 3D printers coming onto the market and it is really hard to keep up with the way they are developing. The Printeer stands out for a couple of reasons, one because of the student centred design, two because of the integration with iPads and thirdly because according to the developers users don't need to know or use CAD design programs or the like. Exciting stuff.

OPINION: Why We Are Misunderstanding the Chromebook iPad Debate (EdSurge News)

OPINION: Why We Are Misunderstanding the Chromebook iPad Debate (EdSurge News) | mrpbps iDevices | Scoop.it

"Stop me if you have heard this argument before. We have decided to buy Chromebooks for our students because they do 90% of what students can do on a typical computer at 1/3 the cost."

John Pearce's insight:

An interesting look at the iPad-Chromebook dichotomy. Though the article is very much focussed on the advantages of iPads, (maybe it should be tablet in general), it does have some useful suggestions on how iPads can be used. Perhaps a more rounded piece might lead to a conclusion that a classroom in which students can access a range of tools which best suit purpose is in the end the best situation of all.

IKEA HACK: articulating tablet mount

IKEA HACK: articulating tablet mount | mrpbps iDevices | Scoop.it

"Browsing on a tablet is great; there's nothing like digging into your favorite site while getting comfy. I find the longer I browser the more supine my posture, eventually my pose self-levels to lethargic mass lying on my back with the tablet above my face, making my arms tired. It would be great if I could combine my thirst for Internet and laziness so I can nerd out online while on my back. So I hacked an IKEA desk lamp into a tablet mount for bed time browsing."

John Pearce's insight:

This is a neat idea which could be used for a whole range of activities besides reading in a "supine position". A similar mount could be used to Airplay demonstrations, hold your device for Facetime, capturing stop motion or other movies....... Thanks to @rgesthuizen
