In our online-driven world, who has the right to be forgotten?

In our online-driven world, who has the right to be forgotten? | Mr Tony's ICT Stuff | Scoop.it

is The "right to be forgotten" has been enshrined by Europe's highest court, ordering search engine operators to delete links containing old, excessive or misleading personal information. A win for privacy or a new form of online censorship? Mahesh Sharma unravels the web and asks: could it happen here?

Tony Hall's insight:

I think this article is really interesting. I have been thinking a lot about the trail we leave in cyberspace as we do stuff online. Should we be able to dictate what appears online about ourselves? Or can that be seen as a form of censorship? Personally, I believe I should be able to say what is available online about me. Especially when it is to do with my private life! I guess it is a form of censorship but it would be me who is doing the censoring. I'm not sure how this will pan out in the coming years but I am certain it will become a big(ger) issue. What are your thoughts?

How do we discover new cities to visit? How do we remember where we've been? With all the tools at our fingertips, I'd still argue it's actually not all that easy. Hi, which just opened to the public today, is a beautifully designed way to find, share, and tell stories about places.

StrataLogica - The Learning is in the Layers

Tony Hall's insight:

I recently talked my school into getting a licence for Stratalogica. When I came across it I thought it was awesome. Especially the "dual globe view", which is awesome for comparing population density with climate or growing season, for example. I wonder if anyone else is using it and would mind sharing their experiences - good and bad.

Curtin University is proud to announce that it is the Australian organiser for participation in the 2014 UNEP-DHI Eco Challenge 2.0.

Water is essential for all life as we know it. A simple fact that sometimes feels forgotten as political and commercial interests take priority.

UNEP-DHI Eco Challenge 2.0 provides an exciting and authentic learning experience for students aged 11-17 through the online strategic game "Aqua Republica". Addressing national curriculum priority dimensions of Sustainability and Asia and Australia's engagement with Asia the experience provides many learning opportunities across Social Studies, Science, Humanities, Health and Physical Education, English, Geography, and more.

This is why ICT is important. No. Vital! Our students need to see things like this so that they understand the positive aspects of technology. They need to see that SMS, Facebook & Twitter are so much more than just a way sharing silly photos of themselves. This technology has the power to affect real, positive change.

I wonder how this will pan out. I like the idea of no advertising but I wonder how they will make money? Will they make us pay? I think possibly yes because that is how I see the Internet moving over the next 5-10 year. Maybe even sooner? I also like the simplicity of the design.

What I did find really interesting about this is that I found about Ello from a Facebook post. And underneath the post were three "related links" to articles that were all very much anti-Ello. Hmmm ...

New Ten Good Online Tools for Creating Mind Maps

Tony Hall's insight:

I played with three of these just now:

1. http://www.mindmup.com/

2. http://coggle.it

3.http://simplesurface.com/

I liked MindMup. It was really simple to use. Though I would like to be able to add other files (i.e. PDFs, Google Docs etc.)

Coggle was easy enough to use as well. Again I would like ot be able to add PDFs etc.

Simple Surface didn't excite me. It felt clunky to use.

My guys are working in groups to make a video to demonstrate understanding of a topic. I found something for the technical side of making a video, as well as stuff for group work. I combined this with my own material on the actual content to come up with something that was quite good. Enjoy!
