RECYCLING: Program converts trash into school buildingsPress-Enterprise (blog)I recently stumbled over some advertising for building schools in Guatemala using plastic bottles stuffed with trashed. I LOVE this idea!
Hug It Forward has built 21 schools in three years using “eco-bricks” – plastic bottles stuffed with inorganic trash, such as plastic sacks and candy wrappers. About 6,200 bottles are needed to build a two-classroom school.
Once filled, the bottles are capped and tucked between layers of chicken wire and attached to wood framing. They are finished with several coats of cement.
The average cost per classroom using this method is $5,000, cheaper than traditional block construction.
