From screen to page: Using pop-culture to encourage reading - Innovate My School

From screen to page: Using pop-culture to encourage reading - Innovate My School | 21 century Learning Commons | Scoop.it
A recent report on the reading habit of the nation’s children has revealed that British kids aren’t adequately challenging themselves with books. While some might see children’s affinity for movies and videogames has a distraction from reading, James Bell of Renaissance Learning is convinced that teachers, librarians and parents can use this passion to get kids onto the page.

I buy picture books whenever I have extra money. They're propped up on the windows behind my desk, and kids love to grab them and read on the floor.  Whatever works!

The Science of Storytelling

The Science of Storytelling | 21 century Learning Commons | Scoop.it

Many studies show us that our brains prefer storytelling to facts. When we read facts, only the language parts of our brains work to understand the meaning. When we read a story, the language parts of our brains and any other part of the brain that we would use if we were actually experiencing what we’re reading, light up.This means that it’s easier for us to remember stories than facts. Our brains can't make major distinctions between a story we’re reading about and something we are actually doing....

Something about telling our stories can often keep us in loops of despair and darkness but in sharing them these clouds can often lift and lead to empowerment and engagement with the world around us again!

This is a great infographic suggesting how physiological aspects are affected by storytelling...believe it or not - do the research and make your own mind up!

Commercial aspects aside and the idea of branding, how could this concept work in  educational environments? Need to give this more thought...ideas anyone - very welcome!

Technology Makes Reading Better. Here's Exactly How. - Te@chThought

Technology Makes Reading Better. Here's Exactly How. - Te@chThought | 21 century Learning Commons | Scoop.it

"Reading is just the communication of ideas through alphanumeric symbols. I’m not sure what this represents such hallowed ground for teachers, but it does. Personally I’d be more concerned with reading habits, reasons for reading, the quality of reading materials, etc. Symbols change, forms change, media change. See the gif animations that demonstrate how a student feels when “bae won’t respond to them.” This is your audience, and these are the symbols they gravitate towards.

In the apps-for-close-reading post, I said that this “interaction” between reader and text during close reading “doesn’t require technology, but can be changed by it.” So it made sense, I thought, to guess at some ways this happens. Or should be happening, anyway.

With more personalization, more access, and more connectivity, we should be creating a generation of close-readers that can’t get enough. So if we’re not, the question is, why isn’t that happening? The pieces are there."
