Should we care about Media Literacy? An ... - Education Week | 21 century Learning Commons | Scoop.it

"In a world dominated by images and video, the ability to see through propaganda and understand the ever present slick marketing messages, is critically important. By some estimates, we are exposed to an average of three-thousand media messages everyday. Everyone, it seems, is out to sell us something. Today's young people, exposed to thousands of media messages, don't think critically about their media habits or consumption. They tend to believe everything they see, read and hear. If it's on television, or the web, then (they've concluded) it must be true. Media illiteracy is rampant". Frank Baker.  Education Week.

Teaching Technology to Teachers: I Used to Think... but Now I Think... | 21 century Learning Commons | Scoop.it

I used to think that I needed to help teachers to use tools, but now I think I need to help teachers meet learning goals.
I used to think that I needed to guide teachers through new technologies, but now I think I need to create safe spaces for them to play and explore.

I used to think that my workshops should be named after new technologies, but now I think they should be named after learning goals.

I used to think that I needed to keep my teachers up to date on new technologies, but I now I think I need to give them a framework to think about how to use technology in their teaching that can adapt to new technologies.

Children and Computers-State of Play

Young children are naturals with computers, leaving their parents baffled. Should we be worried?

There are things in life that I don't understand. The rules of rugby. The continuing success of David Guetta. How to do an overhead kick on Fifa 12.

"You press Y and A really fast, like almost at the same time," says my son Patrick, who's six. I watch as his small thumbs flip between buttons. He could play computer games before he could read. Now he reaches for his Nintendo DS like I reach for my mobile; he fills in idle moments on Fifa, playing games or altering his team or practising shots. I don't mind, except when he gets so wound up by a vital match that he cries. My emails don't make me do that.  The Guardian.

The Original Flipped Classroom | Peer to Peer Review | 21 century Learning Commons | Scoop.it

When it comes to trendy pedagogy, libraries were ahead of the curve. Barbara Fister thinks we should celebrate a little

Two trends that seem to be in the news lately are the rise of MOOCs (massive open online courses that can be taken by huge numbers of students) and flipping the classroom. Both grow partly out of developments in technology that give teachers an opportunity to create digital versions of course content and share it online. Both take a traditional approach to teaching—the lecture—and move it online, giving students the opportunity to engage whenever they want, as often as they want, while providing new opportunities for teachers: to scale up their classroom to unprecedented sizes or to use traditional classrooms for more engaged and interactive forms of learning.

How to Develop 5 Critical Thinking Types - Forbes

How to Develop 5 Critical Thinking Types - Forbes | 21 century Learning Commons | Scoop.it

Great leaders think strategically. They can understand and appreciate the current state as well as see possibilities.

- Critical thinking is the mental process of objectively analyzing a situation by gathering information from all possible sources, and then evaluating both the tangible and intangible aspects, as well as the implications of any course of action.

- Implementation thinking is the ability to organize ideas and plans in a way that they will be effectively carried out.

- Conceptual thinking consists of the ability to find connections or patterns between abstract ideas and then piece them together to form a complete picture.

- Innovative thinking involves generating new ideas or new ways of approaching things to create possibilities and opportunities.

- Intuitive thinking is the ability to take what you may sense or perceive to be true and, without knowledge or evidence, appropriately factor it in to the final decision.

Something to Shout About: New research shows that more librarians means higher reading scores | 21 century Learning Commons | Scoop.it
Librarian Marie Slim knew the cuts were coming. She just didn’t know they’d be this bad. For nearly 10 years, there had been a certified media specialist—and a full-time paraprofessional—at each of the six high schools in her California school district.

Then things slowly began to change. School library journal.

Reforming Copyright Is Possible - The Chronicle Review - The Chronicle of Higher Education | 21 century Learning Commons | Scoop.it

The tantalizing vision of universal access to the cultural and scientific heritage of humanity seemed close to fulfillment in 2008, when Google announced the settlement of a class-action lawsuit charging that its Google Book Search project infringed copyright by scanning in-copyright books from major research-library collections. Sergey Brin, co-founder of Google, later asserted that the settlement was a big win for everyone because it would create a "library to last forever."
