Digital Citizenship | Andrew Churches

Digital Citizenship | Andrew Churches | 21 century Learning Commons | Scoop.it

Global Digital Citizenship is a critical element of any teaching program at any level. Our students are connected. Irrespective of the age of the student, they are wired. We are seeing devices reducing in cost, increasing in availability, and entering most classrooms and almost every school.

But how do we teach Global Digital Citizenship, a fluency that is critical at all levels of education?

Going Retro: Reading Apps for Real Books

Going Retro: Reading Apps for Real Books | 21 century Learning Commons | Scoop.it

YouTube clips. Texting. Twitter. Facebook status updates.

The prevalence of short-attention-span media — easily scanned or consumed — has led to much hand-wringing over how students will develop that lifelong love of reading perceived to be so critical to lifelong learning.

One answer (in addition to “it’s not as bad as you think,” as a recent Pew Research Center study might be summarized) may be in adapting the function to the form. Which is to say to put real, and sometimes classic, children’s books on the latest digital devices via apps and the web.  Mindshift article on reading Apps.

Digital Native vs Digital Citizen? Examining a Dangerous Stereotype

Digital Native vs Digital Citizen? Examining a Dangerous Stereotype | 21 century Learning Commons | Scoop.it

There are a lot of dangerous stereotypes out there. "Asian students are always better at math." "Boys are always better at sports." And perhaps the most dangerous of all: "The current generation are all digital natives."

It is easy to see the danger in the first two stereotypes. They tend to influence the way teachers, parents, peers and society in general classify, justify and treat whichever group is represented by the stereotype. I'm not sure enough people give enough thought to the third, equally dangerous, stereotype.  Edutopia blog.

This is a great insight from the teachers perspective on how to use each item, why each item is a good and bad resource and the benefits of having access to them for your students.

New Literacy Research Infuses Common Core

New Literacy Research Infuses Common Core | 21 century Learning Commons | Scoop.it

In the 15 years since the National Reading Panel in the US convened, researchers have learned a few things about teaching reading.  The truism that students "learn to read, then read to learn," has spawned a slew of early-reading interventions and laws. But the Common Core State Standards offer a very different view of literacy, in which fluency and comprehension skills evolve together throughout every grade and subject in a student's academic life, from the first time a toddler gums a board book to the moment a medical student reads data from a brain scan.
