Lou Salza's curator insight, February 12, 2013 9:30 AM

"...This article provides some suggestions for specific areas of need that some users with dyslexic difficulties encounter. For simplicity, and to prevent overwhelming users, we have intentionally restricted the number in each section as a starting point for ideas rather than presenting lengthy lists. Other useful websites have been included at the end to help you investigate further.

It is important to note that Apps are only byte-size portions of software compared to those you may use on a computer or laptop. It is unlikely that you will find everything you need in just one. However, a small collection that you can work between may provide a convenient and adequate mobile working environment.

Please note that although updating the operating system on older devices will introduce some new features, the functionality of some Apps may be affected by the age and speed of your device...."

Teachers Embrace Digital Learning Strategies | MindShift

Teachers Embrace Digital Learning Strategies | MindShift | 21 century Learning Commons | Scoop.it

Today is the second annual Digital Learning Day, designated to bring attention to the benefits of technology for learning. As part of the effort, PBS LearningMedia has released a survey showing that 74 percent of teachers say educational technology benefits their classroom in many ways, including the ability to reinforce and expand content, motivate students, and respond to a variety of learning styles. Given these numbers, and despite increasing access, it’s not surprising that 68 percent of teachers still want more access to technology in the classroom. That number goes up to 75 percent of teachers in low-income schools.   Read more in this Mindshift article, with infographic on digital learning.

Pippa Davies @PippaDavies 's insight:

Technology has definitely played a huge part in our schools, and I am always thankful for a task that makes our students' lives easier, and more beneficial to their critical thinking.

Literacy, families and learning: Why Older Readers Should Read Picture Books

Literacy, families and learning: Why Older Readers Should Read Picture Books | 21 century Learning Commons | Scoop.it

I have often observed how keen some parents and teachers can be to move their children's reading on from picture books to chapter books. Many parents move their children on from picture books very quickly, encouraging their children to read chapter books almost as soon as they become proficient and fluent in reading. In an age when many parents are sold on the idea that 'Your Baby Can Read' from 6-12 months, there is an urge to move them quickly on to novels.  Literacy, Family and Learning Blog.

Pippa Davies @PippaDavies 's insight:

Encourage picture books with students up to middle grades.  The themes may uncover some rich dialogue. I love it!

The Public Library, Completely Reimagined

The Public Library, Completely Reimagined | 21 century Learning Commons | Scoop.it

You’ll hear a lot of talk about the “death of the public library” these days. It isn’t simply the perpetual budget crises that many face either. It’s the move to digital literature, and the idea that once there are no more print books (or rather if there are no more print books), the library as an institution will cease to exist.

Pippa Davies @PippaDavies 's curator insight, January 24, 2013 7:22 PM

Do not believe that we need to remove books and replace them with fablabs, although they can be a drawcard to the innovator wannabe who comes to the learning commons to discover new information.  This is not the end of libraries, but a clever re alignment of TL's being innovative.

Test yourself (or your students) about your presentation skills. You have to answer 14 questions and then your total score is calculated. The score interpretation chart gives you a summary of your presentation skills and suggests further work in developing your skills.
