Technology Makes Reading Better. Here's Exactly How. - Te@chThought

Technology Makes Reading Better. Here's Exactly How. - Te@chThought | 21 century Learning Commons | Scoop.it

"Reading is just the communication of ideas through alphanumeric symbols. I’m not sure what this represents such hallowed ground for teachers, but it does. Personally I’d be more concerned with reading habits, reasons for reading, the quality of reading materials, etc. Symbols change, forms change, media change. See the gif animations that demonstrate how a student feels when “bae won’t respond to them.” This is your audience, and these are the symbols they gravitate towards.

In the apps-for-close-reading post, I said that this “interaction” between reader and text during close reading “doesn’t require technology, but can be changed by it.” So it made sense, I thought, to guess at some ways this happens. Or should be happening, anyway.

With more personalization, more access, and more connectivity, we should be creating a generation of close-readers that can’t get enough. So if we’re not, the question is, why isn’t that happening? The pieces are there."

The 8 Key Elements Of Digital Literacy - Edudemic

The 8 Key Elements Of Digital Literacy - Edudemic | 21 century Learning Commons | Scoop.it
Many teachers have added ‘digital literacy’ as number four on the list of literacies their students should have (or be working towards, in most cases). Reading, writing, and math are now followed by digital literacy.
Pippa Davies @PippaDavies 's insight:

Important elements associated with digital literacy, especially the last one. Doug Belshaw's criteria from his TED Talk include:

Cultural – Look at the context in which the literacy is situatedCognitive – How do we think when we are using a device (vs when we are not)?Constructive – We should aim to use technology in a constructive (vs a passive) wayCommunicative – We should be using technology to enhance our communicationsConfident – You need to be confident to jump in feet first and explore/use/master/learn technologyCreative – Using technology in the classroom requires some creativity and risk taking – don’t stick to the basics when you can test out a new idea or use for technologyCritical – You need the ability to look at the technologies you’re using (and what you’re using them for) with a critical eyeCivic- We should be using the technologies available to us for greater good (which can be widely defined)

From screen to page: Using pop-culture to encourage reading - Innovate My School | 21 century Learning Commons | Scoop.it
A recent report on the reading habit of the nation’s children has revealed that British kids aren’t adequately challenging themselves with books. While some might see children’s affinity for movies and videogames has a distraction from reading, James Bell of Renaissance Learning is convinced that teachers, librarians and parents can use this passion to get kids onto the page.

How to Infuse Digital Literacy Throughout the Curriculum

How to Infuse Digital Literacy Throughout the Curriculum | 21 century Learning Commons | Scoop.it

In our emerging digital world, a new medium of exchange has developed: online engagement, especially via social media. Effectively engaging online requires a myriad of skills that we strive to foster in school – effective written communication, brevity and civility. These components are often highlighted in Digital Citizenship programs, but in tradition-bound K12 education, we often deride social media as trite or ineffective.

Many students still do not understand the limitations of finding information on the free web. Google is about the extent of it and if it isn't found in the first few results, it does not exist or is too hard to find (or worse still, what is found must be "it.").

From article: "We need to ensure that they know how to evaluate a website, a blog post, a tweet, a Facebook entry. These evaluative skills transfer cross curricularly and prepare students for the broader world of online communication."

The e-book phenomenon: a disruptive technology

The e-book phenomenon: a disruptive technology | 21 century Learning Commons | Scoop.it
The e-book and its associated technology have emerged as a disruptive technology over the past ten years. The aim of this paper is to discuss some of the consequences of this development, based on the work of the e-books in Sweden research project. To explain the impact of the e-book phenomenon we use Winston’s theory of technological innovation, with particular reference to the ‘supervening social necessity’, the combination of factors that turns an innovation into a marketable product. As a result of the technology all aspects of the production, distribution and use of books is affected. The e-book is having different effects in different sectors and in different parts of the world: rapid development in the USA, slower in France and Japan; rapid development in academic libraries, slower development in public libraries, from country to country. These differences suggest that one supervening social necessity may be needed to explain the divergencies. There is a great deal of exaggeration of the impact of the e-book, based mainly on its influence in the USA. Development in other countries is taking place more slowly and differently and in ‘small language’ countries like Sweden, the pace of development, except in academic libraries is likely to be slow.

This excellent research paper outlines the disruptive force of e book publishing and its effects on education and libraries.

Beyond the Maker Space | Backtalk

Beyond the Maker Space | Backtalk | 21 century Learning Commons | Scoop.it
How often do librarians find themselves trying to explain that the library’s mission is not about books but about information? This public misunderstanding about what we are doing and why leads to a community misconception of what we should be doing in the future. The reality is that we as librarians make the same mistake all the time. We know intellectually that informational flow and access are our main missions, but our decisions and our hearts often put the focus on books. Books, in many cases, remain by far the best delivery vehicle for information, but there are many subject areas where other informational vehicles would be more effective, even if implementing those vehicles might mean less money spent on books.
