Pippa Davies @PippaDavies 's insight:

Some awesome reading apps to help your students read using e reader devices.  A wonderful asset for those with Dyslexic tendencies.

Lou Salza's curator insight, February 12, 12:30 PM

"...This article provides some suggestions for specific areas of need that some users with dyslexic difficulties encounter. For simplicity, and to prevent overwhelming users, we have intentionally restricted the number in each section as a starting point for ideas rather than presenting lengthy lists. Other useful websites have been included at the end to help you investigate further.

It is important to note that Apps are only byte-size portions of software compared to those you may use on a computer or laptop. It is unlikely that you will find everything you need in just one. However, a small collection that you can work between may provide a convenient and adequate mobile working environment.

Please note that although updating the operating system on older devices will introduce some new features, the functionality of some Apps may be affected by the age and speed of your device...."

So You Think You Want to Be a Librarian?

So You Think You Want to Be a Librarian? | 21 century Learning Commons | Scoop.it

Most people’s knowledge of librarianship is a mash-up of Katherine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy in Desk Set, some warm and fuzzy memories from an elementary school class visit, Rupert Giles from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, even fuzzier  memories of all-nighters in their college libraries, and maybe a high-minded article or two about the Digital Public Library of America....

Via Karen Bonanno, Carol Koechlin
Pippa Davies @PippaDavies 's insight:

Librarians have a multi-dimensional role to play in any organisation.  Literacy and technology are just part of a day's work,  it is all about integrating knowledge and helping patrons learn what works best for them.

Carol Koechlin's curator insight, May 5, 5:43 PM

"The mission of librarians, according to Lankes, is to “improve society through facilitating knowledge creation in their communities.” I’d unpack that as saying librarians enable learning, which as any librarian will tell you is common practice. It’s so common, in fact, that we never seemed to notice. Now it’s the story we need to tell."

Yes teacher librarians are in the business of learning and learning to learn!

TinkerTags on edshelf

TinkerTags on edshelf | 21 century Learning Commons | Scoop.it

TinkerTags was designed to help bridge the growing racial and ethnic divide in the field of computing. According to Jane Margolis, “Computing is the kind of high-status knowledge that taps a student into the grid of twenty-first-century opportunities” (Margolis, 2008). Computing and skills like computational thinking (a way of solving problems and designing systems that draws on fundamental concepts in computer science like algorithmic thinking, abstraction, decomposition, etc.) are becoming more important in an increasingly technological society. HSI: Historical Scene Investigation

The Historical Scene Investigation Project (HSI) was designed for social studies teachers who need a strong pedagogical mechanism for bringing primary sources into their classroom. With the advent and accessibility of the internet, many libraries, universities and government agencies are housing their historical documents online. Simultaneously, there has been a push in K-12 history education to give students experiences that more closely resemble the work of a real historian. The National Center for History in the Schools (NCHS) provides standards challenging teachers to design experiences in which students:

to go beyond the facts presentedto raise questions and to marshal solid evidence in support of their answers in their textbooks and examine the historical record for themselves to consult documents, journals, diaries, artifacts, historic sites, works of art, quantitative data, and other evidence from the past, and to do so imaginatively--taking into account the historical context in which these records were created and comparing the multiple points of view of those on the scene at the time (National Center for History in the Schools, 1996, p. 14.

Most social studies teachers accept these challenges but find it difficult to find projects and experiences that are accessible for their students. Researching the "cybraries" of the internet takes time, a precious and scarce resource for the typical social studies teacher. While the Internet provides access to Civil War diaries, newspapers from the 1920's, images from the Jim Crow south, and many other primary sources, the sheer number of possibilities is daunting. Even the most sophisticated search engines provide such a vast number of "hits" that a classroom teacher would find it difficult to gather the necessary resources to launch a primary source investigation/interpretation activity.

Pippa Davies @PippaDavies 's insight:

This inquiry based learning looks like fun for social studies teachers wanting something that has been developed with ready set go resources.  *****
