Image Discovery Tools: The New Real-Time Photo Search Engines

From the article intro: "Thanks to services like Twitter and Instagram, and the global 'smartphone saturation' phenomenon, live reporting from big events has never been easier.

No longer do we have to rely on professionals delivering content and images from these events, we have our extended social networks doing this for us.

And, because so many of these updates get fired into the 'public' timeline, virtually any update from anywhere can be found and shared in a matter of seconds.

Data Storytelling: The Art and Science of Social Media Metrics

What is data storytelling?

CS: In two parts, it’s (1) how we use data visualization to help us see and read the story social data tells, and (2) how we as social media experts package that story and make adjustments to campaigns.

We approach social media like a 24-hour-a-day stream of data that should have an impact on how we’re building and managing social communities, programs, promotions and campaigns.

It should, but unless we can find the answer to the question “so what?” all that data just seems time-consuming. That’s why we practice data storytelling. It’s the act of data visualization before, during and after mining/analyzing data.

Digital story-telling and the rise of the new publishers

In order to tell the story of Star Wars, George Lucas had to create a new technology company that was powerful enough to tell that story. The same thing has to happen in digital news publishing.

That’s the conclusion of Jim Bankoff, CEO and Chairman of Vox Media, whose sites The Verge and SB Nation have shaken up the world of tech and sports journalism.

“Story telling digitally is a native art just like broadcasting,” says Bankoff, who argues that publishers must build themselves in response to the shape of the web and its audiences.

If Instagram is a little too static for you, Gifture brings action to your social snapshots.

The free iPhone app lets you turn a series of photos into a singular animated image, or a GIF. They tell a different kind of story from the still images of Instagram, but in nearly the same interface -- and yes, with a similar set of filters.

The Back Story On 'Curated By Intel' - Experimental 'iQ' News Magazine - SVW

Tom Foremki writes: The magazine is curated by Intel employees, choosing and sharing articles from a river of media content surfaced by special tools developed by Intel.

I was pleased to hear Bryan Rhoads, the mastermind behind the project, and its Editor-in-Chief, say that I was one of the people that inspired the venture with my writings about how every company is a media company.

There is a river of content surfaced in real-time by an algorithm, using a set of online sources vetted by Intel. From that river, content is chosen by Intel staff. There is also original content from Intel sources, such as Ken Kaplan's Intel Free Press, and The Creators Project, a joint venture with Vice Media.
