Eric Stockholm's insight:
Often times when books are transfered into movies, the end result can't really compare to the original. Books use nothing but words to paint vivid images in our minds. They create complex characters and put us inside their minds. When something makes the transfer from paper to 35 mm film, those elements are often lost in trying to increase the production value of a movie. This is the case with World War Z. The book, a best seller, is totally different from the movie. The production company took very little from the actual book and made the movie into what would sell better. Granted, the film was highly successful but there is something to be said for a movie that stays true to the book. Stand By Me did an excellent job of this when it was released in 1986, four years after the release of the original short story. The movie stayed true to the book, with some exceptions, and is one of the most beautiful films I have ever seen. It kept the realism of the main characters, had some of the same beautiful dialogue ("I never had any friends like the ones I had when I was twelve. Jesus, does anyone?"), and keep almost the entire plot the same. This movie is among my personal favorites and I would highly recommend it to just about anyone. It'll leave you thinking about what you were like at that age and, more importantly, where you think you are going to end up in the future. The only question you have to ask yourself before watching this movie is, "You guys wanna go see a dead body?" - Vern Tessio
