Manu Swami's insight:

How to become a Motivational Speaker?

When I started my career, I never thought what direction things are going to take. From the corridors of NIFT and the ramp walks to the boardrooms & auditoriums, it has been one hell of an odyssey! No one even anticipated I would be in the list of Top Motivational Speakers in India. At least, I didn't.

"So how did this quest of being one of the Top Motivational Speakers of India begin?" "How did you become a speaker / How to become a Motivational Speaker?" Just a few questions I always get asked.

At first I used to give a normal answer saying "hone your speaking skills, presentation skills etc". The usual shit. But then someone asked me "How can I be like Akash Gautam?". That hit me! (not for career reasons J ). I have always asked people to be the best of their own selves, not imitate anyone. So, I changed my answer.

Now whenever I am asked this question I reply "Be yourself. And try to value add to people whenever you are asked to, by inspiring them to the best of your abilities. It might not always be great funny speeches or a self help book or long boring blog posts. Share stories that inspired you. Not everyone gets to motivate with a mike(I always say I have been more lucky than capable). But, there is a motivator in all of us. Find it within yourself. That's the first step to being a Motivational Speaker.

Manu Swami's insight:

How to improve communication skills?

In the last fifteen years of my working as a youth Motivational Speaker in India and else; if there is one fiery need that I have identified across School  & College campuses in Asian countries- it is ‘How do I become ‘WOW’ in my spoken / written English’ ?

I wish this need were limited only to the students & youth only. Unfortunately it is not. People in the corporate sector; at the end of my corporate trainings will silently / secretly want to get answered the same question.  They look at a Motivational Speaker to solve all their communication problems. This cannot happen till the time they themselves get courageous.

People, with good English skills – have 1) either been good readers in their school/ college days or 2) have had a great public schooling background.

Get yourself disciplined to seeing / hearing a very good English News Channel for a minimum of 60-90 mins daily.

One hour of proper ‘Reading English’ is the next thing to be done. You may do it with a Newspaper or with a novel.

Vocabulary is not very important to do separately; if you are doing the above two things. However, if you can do- ‘nothing like it’. . Remember the first day of your college. Did you know all the people in your class? No- I guess. How is it – that you know , most of them now? This is because- you frequented them – met them again & again, noticed peculiarities about them. The same is the case with words- the more you meet them, the more they will be yours.

TEDxPEC- Akash Gautam- Rise & Shine!

Manu Swami's insight:

How to handle criticism?

By :- Akash Gautam-  Leadership , Stress management trainer in India

Critics are strewn like landmines. They ARE there; wherever you step on. Normally what criticism does to us is that it precipitates the unwanted Brownian movement of our thoughts. At times the problem might become severe and it may lead to a ‘Though Attack’.

I am a Corporate trainer in India. When I decided to add entertainment to my work as a Stress Management trainer / Leadership Trainer: I knew there will be a set of people that will criticize me vehemently because I was trying to do something different in the normal space which was hitherto the domain of Gentlemen.

Corporate Training in a developing country like India is a very niche field. If you have a reasonable amount of competence in any field; you become vulnerable to criticism. In fact, if in the recent past- if you have not faced criticism; may be you are playing your life game too securely and boringly. The cute thing about ‘Criticicm’ is that it will happen the other way around too i.e. even if you do not demonstrate a skill set – you’ll be criticized for not having the same. So, it is like ‘Ye to hoga hee’.

So, people are different. None category of people is a wrong one. They are simply different. The problem comes that we want them to behave according to the way we like. How can they? The day we understood that ‘People are different’ – our people issues shall begin to decrease.
