Five-Minute Film Festival: 8 Interactive Video Tools for Engaging Learners

Five-Minute Film Festival: 8 Interactive Video Tools for Engaging Learners | Motivating EFL learners via technology | Scoop.it

"It's no secret that I am a passionate advocate for using video in the classroom. When used well, videos can help students make connections to people and ideas beyond their usual frame of reference. That's why I've been really excited to see a wave of new (and mostly free or low-cost!) tech tools recently that enable teachers to take favorite clips and make them more valuable for educational use. Whether you use videos to flip your classroom or you just appreciate the power of video to engage kids, maybe one of the tools in my playlist below will help you go deeper in 2014."

Why Teachers Who Use Technology Will Replace Teachers Who Don't? - EdTechReview™ (ETR)

Why Teachers Who Use Technology Will Replace Teachers Who Don't? - EdTechReview™ (ETR) | Motivating EFL learners via technology | Scoop.it
The generation today loves technology and expects the same from his/her ideal person. Teachers generally play that role, and if they don’t use technology, an invisible wall gets erected in between them.
Anna-Liisa Hayward's insight:

This article summarises the point very well, teachers who don´t use technology in their teaching will fail to motivate their students and will lose out as professionals.

The Hidden Barrier To Learning And What You Can Do About It

The Hidden Barrier To Learning And What You Can Do About It | Motivating EFL learners via technology | Scoop.it
There is a hidden barrier that prevents people from learning - emotions. Instructional designers that fail to take into account the emotional barriers learners face will find their courses met with resistance. It’s important to account for emotions in the design process.

Via Gust MEES
Anna-Liisa Hayward's insight:

This article looks at the role of emotions in learning and their effect on motivation on e-learning. It could equally be applied to learning in general, a useful little summary.

A Neurologist Makes the Case for the Video Game Model as a Learning Tool

A Neurologist Makes the Case for the Video Game Model as a Learning Tool | Motivating EFL learners via technology | Scoop.it
The popularity of video games is not the enemy of education, but rather a model for best teaching strategies.
Anna-Liisa Hayward's insight:

According to this neurologist: "When learners have opportunities to participate in learning challenges at their individualized achievable challenge level, their brains invest more effort to the task and are more responsive to feedback. Students working toward clear, desirable goals within their range of perceived achievable challenge, reach levels of engagement much like the focus and perseverance we see when they play their video games......

In relation to the video game model, it is important to plan instruction keeping in mind that the executive function circuits are late to mature - well into the twenties. The visible evidence seen on their graphs or rubric progress evidence helps students develop the concept that effort toward a goal brings progress. This, in turn, builds their capacity to resist their young brain's strong drive for immediate gratification."

Very interesting article from a brain-based point of view; demonstrates the levels of motivation and learning that could be achieved by taking the above into account.

How Technology Changes The Skills We Need To Learn

How Technology Changes The Skills We Need To Learn | Motivating EFL learners via technology | Scoop.it
The choices we make are our own. We’re as smart as we want to be.
Anna-Liisa Hayward's insight:

Some think that technology will make us lazy both in terms of our minds and our bodies. This article makes some interesting points, that technology can free us up and allow us to focus on our passions and on making connections with each other:

"The reality of modern life is that we are all uploading old patterns to the cloud to make room for new ones. The choices we make are our own. We’re as smart as we want to be."

"As Sandy Pentland, a big data expert at MIT and one of the most cited computer scientists in the world, put it in a recent interview, “We teach people that everything that matters happens between your ears when in fact it actually happens between people.”
