| Easy Read Time Teacher

| Easy Read Time Teacher | Motivate your Dyslexic Teen | Scoop.it
EasyRead Time Teacher is a division of Theme Time Australia, dedicated to helping children and adults overcome the problems encountered when learning to tell the time on analogue clocks.
Vivien Clark's insight:

I have just bought one of these for home, you see them in many Queensland primary classrooms and they are great for explicitly illustrating analogue time. Using this, my Teen will be able to better relate digital time with analogue time, feel more confident about telling the time accurately and less anxious about being late.

A great resource to bypass the useless reading the theory phase of computational thinking and get right to the ....thinking phase.

This cartoon guide illustrates several processes of Computational Thinking specifically looking at problem solving, designing, and understanding human behaviour. A visual way of looking at how each of the processes actually work accompanied by an explanation of each of the processes.

I really like this idea, thanks for sharing. This resource would be great for students that are visual learners. This is a skill that is addressed almost right across the curriculum.

Stop Climbing, Start Swimming: The hidden advantages of dyslexia: Jonathan Buchanan at TEDxWarwickED - YouTube

TED Conference Speaker Dr. Aditi Shankardass, Brain-Learning Specialist Discusses advanced brain/learning disorder diagnostics that can help re-direct succes...
Vivien Clark's insight:

We talk about brains often, with or without zombies. I like this little motivational TED Talks clip as it shows a young man who is not a perfect orator. He doesn't talk about dysfunction of disability but even though he sees an advantage, he doesn't claim it's easy going. He simply suggests that we stop trying to climb trees when our brains are clearly built for swimming (not a literal fact there of course).

What most schools don't teach

Learn about a new "superpower" that isn't being taught in 90% of US schools.
Vivien Clark's insight:

I have been Skyping my Teen the link to this for months (yes he is in the next room but Skype gives him bite sized bits of text to read and he cannot help being curious about what crazy thing I'm sending him this time).

Hmmm, I think he is ready for something more complex, it only took him 20 minutes to come up with an animation of questionable taste (teenagers!), well at least he's coding now.

Teesside students urge experts to keep the term dyslexia

Teesside students urge experts to keep the term dyslexia | Motivate your Dyslexic Teen | Scoop.it
Teesside students today urged experts to forget moves to ditch the term dyslexia, saying it helped them overcome the condition
Vivien Clark's insight:

The 'label' dyslexia is not an excuse, it is a reason. A diagnosis or label of dyslexia or language based learning difficulty is a way that children can understand how they are simply 'a different kind of normal' and come to understand the way in which their particular difficulty governs the way they can best learn.

This label can also prompt (and regularly remind) teachers to provide multiple ways of understanding the material, and multiple ways for their students to demonstrate understanding.

This is interesting Vivien. Many times in a classroom it is the behaviours taht stand out that are catered for. Dyslexia is almost silent. Too often teachers do not know what to look for nad if there is a diagnosis they are unsure how to cater for it.

Still trying to find a free text to speech app that has a better voice but this is an old faithful. My teen can carry it around and it has heaps of other good programs that are all supported for people with low literacy confidence. Hey even my 24 year old is using text to speech now at uni.
