Shorter holiday shopping season not a bust for SF retailers

Shorter holiday shopping season not a bust for SF retailers | Motionloft on the Web | Scoop.it
The six fewer days between Thanksgiving and Christmas this holiday shopping season — the shortest in more than a decade — has some San Francisco retailers stressed, but not about a dip in business.
Krysta Gahagen's insight:

As Motionloft sensors collect data over time, year over year trends are analyzed by the team at Motionloft. This historical data is arguably as important as the real-time data the sensors are collecting to retailers and commercial property owners.

In this official blog post by Motionloft, a few new tools from the company's web application are released. The Motionloft team has been hard at work designing features that allow subscribers to draw relevant insights from data quicker than ever before. The three main tools that are talked about allow subscribers to compare separate locations, analyze optimal operating hours, and watch the flow of traffic within shopping centers each hour. Motionloft analyzes people and vehicle traffic for commercial and civic purposes | L'Atelier: Disruptive innovation

Motionloft analyzes people and vehicle traffic for commercial and civic purposes | L'Atelier: Disruptive innovation | Motionloft on the Web | Scoop.it
Motionloft has developed a solution for collecting and aggregating real-time data on San Francisco’s pedestrian and vehicle traffic, which can be used by real estate or retail sector players or to help with city planning.
Krysta Gahagen's insight:

This article is one of my favorite recent features on Motionloft, since Clémence Coursimault highlights how Motionloft outshines the competition by providing data for all passing pedestrians and vehicles, rather than just pedestrians with WiFi-enabled portable devices. Coursimault also provides a comprehensive overview of the services Motionloft provides and the usefulness of Motionloft collected data in multiple sectors.

Keen On… Peter Hirshberg: Why Smart Entrepreneurs Should Care About Smart ...
Krysta Gahagen's insight:

This article and video from TechCrunch talk about two of my favorite things: open data and collaborative consumption. Despite the usual resistance to change and red-tape barriers often encountered in governmental matters, San Francisco is a hotbed of activity when it comes to innovation in both of these aspects.

In the video, Peter Hirshberg speaks about how impressed he is with Motionloft - a real world analytics company that allows retailers to make better business decisions. Motionloft is also excelling in San Francisco's open data work, as the first private sector company to provide the city with open data; data that is useful for a number of reasons, including aiding emergency responders.

San Francisco (obviously) has entrepreneurs and a huge amount of data and is finally figuring out how to use both of those to make the city better for businesses and residents.

Krysta Gahagen's insight:

When I read about another I Made It! event on Bakery Square's blog, I marked it in my calendar - though I wouldn't be able to attend, I knew the data that Motionloft was gathering would tell a compelling story. After having talked with Bakery Square's property managers last winter, I know how driven they are to make community focused events successful. Saturday's BkSq Family Fun in the Square was no exception and is another great example of how collaboration between property managers and their tenants can benefit both parties, as well as the community.

This Fast Company feature is a great overview of Motionloft's basic features, but these days the company offers even more insight and data points. Motionloft has also expanded the sensor network and is gathering data in cities and towns across the country, while maintaining the original privacy policies.

Esri Users Describe Change Management for Adopting Location Analytics

Esri Users Describe Change Management for Adopting Location Analytics | Motionloft on the Web | Scoop.it
Location analytics has value, but executives said it takes change management processes and persistence to gain traction in most companies.
Krysta Gahagen's insight:

Over the past several decades, technology has come to the aid of brokers who formerly relied mostly on fieldwork. In even more recent years, innovations in big data and location analytics have provided a more complete picture for brokers, retailers, and property owners. Though the commercial real estate industry is notoriously slow to adopt new technologies (especially if those tools are complicated and cumbersome), location analytic companies are proving that reliable data presented in an easy to understand format is invaluable when used in conjunction with previous location knowledge. GIS and location data providers supply hard data, replacing “gut feelings” and estimates.

Motionloft’s interior pedestrian analytics are highlighted in this feature as a means of knowing which areas of a shopping center are most heavily trafficked (in theory, leading to lease agreements in which rent is more directly correlated with footfall amounts). The Shopping Center Group’s Gregg Katz mentions that having access to this data is not enough - getting subscribers to both understand and utilize the provided data is a challenge. After reading this article, it appears this challenge is being tackled by a combination of industry leaders offering success stories and easy to understand visual analytics.

The team at Motionloft is dedicated to helping clients better comprehend, interpret, and make use of Motionloft’s real world analytics. For more information, visit motionloft.com and get in touch today!

Motionloft worked with @walksf to monitor pedestrian activity on #Walk2Work Day. http://t.co/UgKdVcrTtp Here's what we saw! #SanFrancisco
Krysta Gahagen's insight:

When Walk San Francisco was organizing the nation's first city-wide Walk to Work Day, they contacted us at Motionloft to explore the possibility of collecting data on the event. We happily agreed, but did not know if the data would reflect a successful event or just another typical Friday morning  commute (obviously, we were cheering Walk SF on). Fortunately, Walk to Work Day had a great turnout and a few days later, Motionloft released a few stats from the data we gathered during the event. It will be very interesting to compare this year's first Walk to Work Day with future events!
