The Mother Of Animated Series <3
The Hulu original series “Mother Up” is new to the scene as of 2013 and has been said to be the female response to the well-known series “Family Guy”. This show, like “Family Guy”, uses comedy to display the fears and problems of parent raising abilities. It attempts to bring a female voice to comedic animated series using modern female problems like attempting to be career oriented and a family woman at the same time. Hulu adds to this idea of female empowerment with commercials that encourage people and most importantly women.
“Mother Up” is an animated series about an ego-centric, career oriented, woman who decides to move her family to the Canadian suburbs as a way of convincing the media that she respects the thought of a household family, loves her children and as well as all other children in the world after she is busted hunting children in South America.. Rudi was a successful executive producer in New York, living a very luxurious life, where family life was not important to her.
After Rudi makes the transition from fame and fortune to settling down in the boring suburban family neighborhood, she begins to find out almost immediately how terrible a mother she really is. Slowly but surely she tries to become a better mother, but because of her egocentric personality it becomes increasingly harder with the more effort she puts into becoming better. There is even a moment in the series where she is referred to as a “responsibility challenged mother” by one of the other mothers in her daughters swimming classes.
Rudi deals not only with the extreme change from fame to normal, but also from not having to run her home to her husband leaving her a single mother with no idea of who her children are. It is an obvious sense that Rudi does love her children; sadly she doesn’t have the mind to understand the responsibility needed to be a good mother. This I believe is the foundation of the series, Rudi learning that it takes much more than money, popularity, and material things to raise children.
Eva Longoria plays the main character Rudi. She’s been seen in things like; The Young and the Restless, Dragnet, and the most known, Desperate Housewives. In Desperate Housewives Longoria also plays a mother with issues raising her children. She brings an already disoriented mother to the show. As a dysfunctional mother in Desperate Housewives, we can begin to associate and compare it to the show. I believe this is helpful to the show. When asked to compare the two characters Longoria says “I think Rudi is Gaby on steroids. There's things we can do in a more comedic way in animation that we could never do in live action.”
The flow of “Mother Up” is pretty straight-forward and aims obviously towards one certain audience in particular. Hulu uses ads promoting being a mother. One commercial in particular is the Nick Moms advertisement. It shows the abundant Mom series now showing on Nickelodeon with the slogan “Being a mom is mother funny”. Other ads towards women are the many beauty products like Dove and L’Oreal. The ads also display the career oriented part by having college commercials.
Although it is debatable I believe the flow breaks with the many electronic commercials. I say it could be debatable because it takes away from the chaotic life of Rudi with a serene commercial about a laptop. However it could also add to the modernity of the series. Another ad that breaks the flow is the Mascot commercial that has absolutely nothing to do with the series. It’s only put there to keep you connected to Hulu, by telling you to go check out other Hulu series.
“Mother Up” was a great show to watch, especially comparing it to shows like Family guy and American dad where it’s the fathers who are terrible and the women who are always perfect. You get a flip of scripts and I think it appeals to the female world because even though Rudi is an irresponsible parent, she brings enjoyment to the different fears of being a mother. The flow works well with the show as it promotes all the themes in the series. Rudi is what a lot of moms like, she has style, a career, and more importantly she has fun. As she deals with her problems of trying to raise her children on her own a lot of women can relate to her, not with the same extremities, but with the undertone of single motherhood.
