10 Libraries To Visit With Google Street View

"Although at the very early stage, Google Street View is being used not only outside but also inside buildings. From several institutions and businesses that can benefit from using this advanced tool, bookstores and libraries are the ones that stand out – they offer the magic of being among the best of all friends: books. Being in such a place makes you want read something now.

In this post I’d like to introduce you to great libraries, which are most probably not in your neighborhood, but you can visit them in seconds without leaving your chair. It’s the power of the virtual world delivered by Google Street View. No geographical restrictions apply in this case."

Library Makers: a new project resource! | Library as Incubator Project

Library Makers: a new project resource! | Library as Incubator Project | More TechBits | Scoop.it
librarykerri's insight:

2 awesome resources, all rolled up into one.

Library as Incubator Project - "The mission of the Library as Incubator Project is to promote and facilitate creative collaboration between libraries and artists of all types, and to advocate for libraries as incubators of the arts."  The site highlights tons of fascinating things being done in or related to libraries!

Library Makers - (as reviewed in this Library as Incubator post) "is somewhere between a how-to craft book and a web magazine – basically a solid inventory of craft and art projects that work well in a library – the materials are things that most library craft supply rooms have already, or are easily obtainable."

ALA LibraryLab - Google+ | More TechBits | Scoop.it

"About this community

Mission: To bring librarians and Boing Boing readers (aka, Happy Mutants) together to generate support for and raise interest in libraries via projects at local libraries.

Goals:

- Help find and propose content about libraries that could be posted to Boing Boing.

- Provide active ways for Happy Mutants to support and get involved with their local libraries (eg, toolkits, best practices, ideas for local projects).

- Create dynamic programming at library conferences that Library Boing Boingers can then take outside of the library community to promote libraries (eg, SxSW, local community events, etc.).

- Work together to help Happy Mutants advance our shared interests (eg, copyright reform, net neutrality, game culture, digital divide issues, open government, etc.).

- Coordinate an international community of librarians working with their own Happy Mutant groups."

Project for Public Spaces | 25 Mini-Adventures in the Library

Project for Public Spaces | 25 Mini-Adventures in the Library | More TechBits | Scoop.it

I wanted to share a quick list of fun things you can do at the library other than just check out books. Any of these ideas would be a great boredom buster. Just tell your kid you have an adventure in mind and embrace the mission with verve. You will have a great time!

Doug Mirams's curator insight, February 10, 4:06 PM

"Recently, we came across a Amy Bowers’ MamaScout, a blog that “celebrates passionate, creative family living through posts showcasing open-ended play and projects, stellar resources, weird ideas, and gentle encouragements to slow down and embrace the ordinary.” Amy often writes about inventive ways that parents can use public space to spark their kids’ imaginations, with posts on everything from poetry bombing to hands-on exploration and the importance of wandering."

"But it was a post on libraries that caught our attention last week, for how it exemplifies the kind of Lighter, Quicker, Cheaper thinking that each individual can use to activate their public spaces in new and exciting ways right now. Amy was kind enough to agree to let us re-publish her post, so without further ado, here are 25 mini-adventures that you can have at your local library—whether you have kids, or not!"

Toronto Library uses social media to keep people reading

Toronto Library uses social media to keep people reading | More TechBits | Scoop.it

It’s the typical morning commute. For many residents of the city of Toronto that means taking the TTC.  To pass the time, many choose to read, whether it’s a newspaper, a novel or an e-book on their iPad.

Just as many more libraries across Canada are turning to social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook to spread the message of how important literacy is, so, too is the Toronto Public Library.

"Yesterday Google was hit with a fine of $190,000 in Germany for illegally collecting personal data, emails, passwords, and photos from unprotected wifi networks via its Google Street View cars. Coincidentally, Microsoft launched an Online Privacy Awareness Campaign yesterday which will help people learn how to better protect their online privacy. Two of the major ways discussed are actually quite easy to implement – turning on private browsing mode and enabling the Do Not Track feature in your browser."
