The idea that we "go to work" is a nostalgic, quaint notion. Many of us are always working. That means that ideas, behaviors and tools had better change too.

Don’t think that Brexit will save you from the EU data protection rules | Cocreative Management Snips | Scoop.it
You’ll no doubt have heard about new data protection rules - allegedly tougher than the current UK Data Protection Act 1998 – which were agreed in Brussels last December, becoming enforceable in two years’ time, known as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
Jacqui Hogan's insight:
Well, it was a nice thought. But it seems likely that European data guardianship rules will still be with us. If you want to discuss GDPR in particular further, BCS ELITE are running an unconference on this topic on November 3rd in London. Your opportunity to discuss with other Tech Leaders.

SMEs expect struggle to fill high-skilled roles

SMEs expect struggle to fill high-skilled roles | Cocreative Management Snips | Scoop.it
As the UK carves out a new economic future following the vote to leave the EU, ensuring everyone has the skills to compete is more important than ever. Yet acute skills shortages are holding back businesses across all regions and many sectors, including manufacturing, construction and professional services. That’s according to this year’s CBI/Pearson Education and Skills survey published today.
Jacqui Hogan's insight:
Well, then businesses should be prepared to train people! It's only going to worse as we limit immigration. Having said that, we should want to grow our own skilled people anyway.

It does make me wonder what students are learning in Universities though. Are their courses no longer teaching useful skills?

The UK is already suffering from an IT skills crisis, so how will leaving the European Union affect tech jobs now and in the future?
Jacqui Hogan's insight:
We need to get better value from our IT work force by managing them better than we do at the moment. I think most are motivated, but we need to ensure they are working on the right stuff and have the tools and support to do it well. That takes good management. (I can help)

CEO Pay - How much is too much?

CEO Pay - How much is too much? | Cocreative Management Snips | Scoop.it
Is paying the average blue-chip chief executive £5m a year, more than 180 times the average wage, excessive pay?  Not according to Goldman Sachs and Northern Trust, who have been …
Jacqui Hogan's insight:
There is NO justification for the levels of executive pay we now see. I've heard the argument that 'we have to pay this to get good people', but this has become a self fulfilling act. It also implies that good people are only motivated by outrageous financial reward! Which is rubbish. Good people CARE about the organisation they lead.

I have absolutely no problem with people who start a company themselves and reap the rewards when they succeed. Anyone who has started a company will know the effort etc. that goes into this. Not do I have a problem with people who come into a flagging company and make it great. What I abhor are the greedy who 'negotiate' a short term appointment at great cost to the company. I also abhor the feeble company executives who allow this to happen. Shame on you most of all.

New research from Ricoh reveals nearly 70% of young workers stay later than necessary in the office to appear to be working harder.
Jacqui Hogan's insight:
How crazy is it that we still equate success with being present? Surely the most important thing is what is produced?

I know I bang on about presenteeism being a facet of old management, but I'd thought that increased working away from the office would make this a thing of the past. Clearly not. Or at least, not yet. Do we really have to wait until the Millennials are in charge before this happens?

Microsoft Slammed for 'Sneaky' Windows 10 Updates

Microsoft Slammed for 'Sneaky' Windows 10 Updates | Cocreative Management Snips | Scoop.it
Reports of forced or sneaky upgrades from earlier Windows versions is probably not the Windows 10 experience Microsoft wants to talk about.
Jacqui Hogan's insight:
If you are running Windows 7 or 8, be aware that Windows 10 may automatically install itself on your PC too.

I was pretty mad when Microsoft installed Windows 10, without authorisation, on one of my PCs. Don't get me wrong, I love Windows 10, but I like to plan my upgrades e.g. doing a full backup first. Apparently, Microsoft have change the status of 10 to 'recommended'. This means that if you auto install recommended updates, as most of us do, you will now get Windows 10. This is not a trivial upgrade. You can roll it back, but this isn't foolproof.

Badly done Microsoft.

Should It Matter If Our Workplace Managers Are Leaders Too?

Should It Matter If Our Workplace Managers Are Leaders Too? | Cocreative Management Snips | Scoop.it
There’s an entire industry built around training managers to be great leaders, and why not? It makes sense that the person tasked with managing a team should
Jacqui Hogan's insight:
I get SO frustrated by discussions about leadership and management. We really need to develop and respect great managers much more than we do. Managers are responsible for making the execution happen. To do that they need leadership skills of a different kind to true 'top of the organisation' leaders. Managers do not just 'administer' at the bidding of some gung-ho leader. Truly successful managers have many of the same skills, especially those of motivation, inspiration and creativity. We have become great at training and developing so-called leaders and are still rubbish at creating and developing great managers. Without managers, few leaders would achieve anything. And if you think about it, we need many more good managers than we do leaders.
