LinkedIn is rife with advice from CEOs. They say lots of CEO things, that sound great to the vast masses that would love to be respected, rich, and powerful. But let's get real: The vast, vast
Jacqui Hogan's insight:

The most important tiup mentioned is 'turn off your smart phone' when not in the office. Being a middle manager is a bit like being middle class. You're expected to do (or pay for) everything and take the blame for everything.

Men and women disagree on reasons why IT is less attractive to women

Men and women disagree on reasons why IT is less attractive to women | Cocreative Management Snips | Scoop.it
Mortimer Spinks and Computer Weekly survey finds men and women disagree on why IT is a less attractive career choice for females.
Jacqui Hogan's insight:

I can understand that women don't like the idea of joining an IT department because they think it will be macho. A friend left a company because of this macho stuff e.g. shouting in meetings, swearing, beer swilling meetings in the pub etc. But they aren't all like that!

HR Professionals by Rosario Longo HRM: Leadership and management, how different are these? | Cocreative Management Snips | Scoop.it
Jacqui Hogan's insight:

This article sets out something I feel strongly about - that there is not, and should not be, a clear distiction between managers and leaders. We often talk about the need for better leaders, as if they were some mythical and separate beast! Leadership is a skill, not a role, and is needed at all levels in an organisation.

Why Middle Managers Are So Unhappy

Why Middle Managers Are So Unhappy | Cocreative Management Snips | Scoop.it
The problem is often their bosses.
Jacqui Hogan's insight:

Middle Managers are the glue that holds the organisation together. Yet they are often the worst treated and the most over worked group in any organisation.

Many organisations (especially large and public ones) have too many of them, yet they still get overworked. Sometimes this is because they seek to justify their existence through ever more processes, because they lack leadership training and spent most of their time passing communication up and down the line.

No wonder they are so unhappy!

Entrepreneurs lose £14,000 on each bad hire - CMI

Entrepreneurs lose £14,000 on each bad hire - CMI | Cocreative Management Snips | Scoop.it
A lack of applicants with the right skills has been blamed for a rash of bad hiring in the SME community, according to a new study commissioned by Sandler Training.
Jacqui Hogan's insight:

When you think of the impact recruiting the wrong person has, it is really surprising how inexperienced many SME bosses are. Many managers in larger organisations are equally bad, but the impact is rather less. Many rely on recruitment companies, but forget that those companies are trying to get people into jobs. They don't have to live with the consequences.

UK: Thames Valley LEP demands improved broadband connectivity | CASNE

UK: Thames Valley LEP demands improved broadband connectivity | CASNE | Cocreative Management Snips | Scoop.it

The SME forum for the Thames Estuary Valley Local Enterprise Partnership (TEV LEP) has announced its objectives this week as it re-formed.

Head of business in the region met to identify the most pressing issues that affect the TEV LEP community.

Faster broadband access was a priority for many businesses, and take up in the Thames estuary is higher than many other areas.

Rapid take up is, in fact, a cause for concern for members of the forum, as they warned other areas may receive more investment in broadband infrastructure before their area.

Amanda Gee, Chairman of the SME forum and MD of Berkshire Media Group, said: “We were shocked to find that some SMEs report they actually have better connectivity in their homes than in their business spaces.

“We … believe widening access to superfast broadband across the region is vitally important as better access to broadband enables SMEs to create operational efficiencies in the way they work.”

Businesses not hiring IT apprentices despite skills shortage claims

Businesses not hiring IT apprentices despite skills shortage claims | Cocreative Management Snips | Scoop.it
Despite claims the UK and US are in the grip of an IT skills shortage, the number of people being accepted for IT apprenticeships has fallen by one third - with less one in 10 applicants securing places.
Jacqui Hogan's insight:

This fills me with dismay. At a time when, apparently, we have a major IT skill shortage, how can we get more people onto the first rung of the IT ladder.  I truly thought this was a great solution. Is the quality of applicants really so sub-standard, or is there a major mis-match of expectations?

Gartner analysts suggest you keep a close eye on the items listed in its latest trend report. Michael Kassner examines the technologies on the list and finds a common thread: cloud.

Gartner is suggesting that security will be based much more on individual risk assessment as we re-assess what security and protection actually means.

“Last week, I had the privilege of taking a behind the scenes tour of Zappos and speaking with several of their top leaders.”

Jacqui Hogan's insight:

2 Zappos in one week! Earlier this week at an HR forum, I met someone who had a tour of Zappos a few weeks earlier. They came away full of praise for their management approach - especially their open attitute to empowerment. Is their approach a step too far? While it may look very open and flexible, it is quite bureacratic with it's 'circles' . I worry that it is great for those who shout loudly, but not so good for the introverts (or even those who hate loud music).

Or do you think you could implement it in your company?
