Breaking Bias: A Conversation with Josh Davis of the Neuroleadership Institute - Workday Blog

Breaking Bias: A Conversation with Josh Davis of the Neuroleadership Institute - Workday Blog | Cocreative Management Snips | Scoop.it
How can unconscious bias impact a company's diversity goals, or who a manager chooses to promote? Read our interview with Dr. Josh Davis from the Neuroleadership Institute.
Jacqui Hogan's insight:
Reading the press from around the world makes me think that we are becoming less tolerant of difference, Yet, to be really successful, diversity is key. Diversity gives us access to a wider pool or skills and talent, and makes our lives more interesting. Rather like change though, it can also seem threatening too. We make many assumptions about people who are not like us, often to their detriment. They aren't like us, so must be inferior or less trustworthy. We all have unconscious biases that we need to challenge to enable us to embrace diversity usefully.

How diverse is your organisation? Do you have unconscious biases?

Blog: Are you prepared for the General Data Protection Regulation? - SIRE

the EU General Data Protection Act is the need for organisations to be far more vigorous in how they record, handle and transfer data.
Jacqui Hogan's insight:
The whole area of Data Protection is a minefield, and GDPR just makes it more so. Particularly vulnerable are medium sized organisations, who are big enough to catch the eye of the law enforcers, but not large enough to have their own dedicated teams to implement the right protocols and processes.

This article gives a good overview.

The Culture Ate Our Corporate Reputation | Cocreative Management Snips | Scoop.it
Former IBM chairman Lou Gerstner says a failure of institutional culture isn’t what causes major shortfalls in a company’s performance and a failure to serve customer needs. CEOs must do more than establish corporate values. Look at what your actions tell employees.

The vast majority of organisations require local IT partners to realise the productivity and performance potential of the cloud and mobile working.
Jacqui Hogan's insight:
There is still a big gap between those defining the strategy and the techies managing the IT stuff. Many times the boss doesn't understand the strategic use of IT, and nor do the techies. Getting external help can save a lot of money and grief.

Well, it was a nice thought. But it seems likely that European data guardianship rules will still be with us. If you want to discuss GDPR in particular further, BCS ELITE are running an unconference on this topic on November 3rd in London. Your opportunity to discuss with other Tech Leaders.

SMEs expect struggle to fill high-skilled roles

SMEs expect struggle to fill high-skilled roles | Cocreative Management Snips | Scoop.it
As the UK carves out a new economic future following the vote to leave the EU, ensuring everyone has the skills to compete is more important than ever. Yet acute skills shortages are holding back businesses across all regions and many sectors, including manufacturing, construction and professional services. That’s according to this year’s CBI/Pearson Education and Skills survey published today.
Jacqui Hogan's insight:
Well, then businesses should be prepared to train people! It's only going to worse as we limit immigration. Having said that, we should want to grow our own skilled people anyway.

It does make me wonder what students are learning in Universities though. Are their courses no longer teaching useful skills?

When is the crowd wise or can the people ever be trusted? | Nesta

When is the crowd wise or can the people ever be trusted? | Nesta | Cocreative Management Snips | Scoop.it
Whether, and to what extent you think a crowd can be wise has implications for the kinds of engagement you might advocate.
Jacqui Hogan's insight:
This article raises a fundamental question about the value of collective wisdom and experience. I'm a great believer in the value of sharing knowledge, but I do worry when we assume this also means that every person has a equal share of it.

The truth is that not everyone values this to the same extent, nor seeks it out. But many do, and this is where collaboration with things like Innovation works well. Where people are each motivated to learn and to share openly that is.

Where it works not so well is with democracy. But this is a topic for a different discussion!

UK growth held back as bosses lose the trust of middle management

UK growth held back as bosses lose the trust of middle management | Cocreative Management Snips | Scoop.it
British business growth is being undermined from within by widespread mistrust of senior managers, according to a new report published today.
Jacqui Hogan's insight:
Totally agree. There is way too much attention placed on 'leadership' and not enough on management delivery. Which is what most middle managers are expected to do. Middle management is often the least appreciated, most put-upon and least invested in part of the organisation. Leaders need to involve their middle managers in the strategic decision making, and then support them if they want to succeed. If they don't do this, middle managers will not trust them and won't perform. If they don't perform, neither will the rest of the organisation.

5 tips to better understand millennial managers

5 tips to better understand millennial managers | Cocreative Management Snips | Scoop.it
If you aren't already managed by a millennial, chances are you soon will be as these young workers quickly take on leadership roles in corporate America.
Jacqui Hogan's insight:
What really bugs me about articles like this is the idea that just because people were born roughly at the same time, they will all be the same. Human experience varies widely. Much more widely than mere age.

I've managed people older than me and been managed by people younger than me. the difference was confidence and competence every time. Some younger people don't understand the technology (how ever much they might use it), and some older people really get it. It isn't about pigeon holing into 'millennials' or 'baby boomers'. It is about valuing individuals for their unique knowledge and experience. Yes, individuals. Management is about getting the most from individuals, not treating them all the same. Or worse, treating one age group differently than another!

We should all be flexible, regardless of age, to survive in the workplace today. But it isn't only millennials who can do this.

I know I bang on about presenteeism being a facet of old management, but I'd thought that increased working away from the office would make this a thing of the past. Clearly not. Or at least, not yet. Do we really have to wait until the Millennials are in charge before this happens?
