Jacqui Hogan's insight:

A friend of mine has just won an Apple Watch in a raffle, and was over the moon! But now he's devastated because it won't work with his iPhone 4. Is technology moving too fast for us ordinary mortals to keep up? If my iPhone is in my pocket, do I really need it on my wrist as well? Is this really just a gimmick?

How Great Coaches Ask, Listen, and Empathize

How Great Coaches Ask, Listen, and Empathize | Cocreative Management Snips | Scoop.it

Leaders today still have to understand their business thoroughly, but it’s unrealistic and ill-advised to expect them to have all the answers...One way for leaders to adjust to this shift is to adopt a new role: that of coach. By using coaching methods and techniques...

Via Karl Wabst
Jacqui Hogan's insight:

Even coaching isn't enough. You also need to be a mentor. Mentors not only coach the team, they also share their knowledge and experience with the team.

Karl Wabst's curator insight, February 18, 3:06 PM

Leaders, do not create the expectation that you have all of the answers.

That is so twentieth century.

In today’s uncertain and complex world, that is unlikely. Even if it were true, it is not enough.

If being the font of all process information at your company is your focus, then you are merely managing. You are not leading.

Learn how to lead your people. Coach them so they can grow the company.

You might worry that if you lead your people to be better, they might leave. Your time and money are wasted. Worse, you think that you are just training tomorrow’s competitors.

Instead, ask yourself, what is the cost if they stay?

You cannot do it all.

Businesses not hiring IT apprentices despite skills shortage claims

Businesses not hiring IT apprentices despite skills shortage claims | Cocreative Management Snips | Scoop.it
Despite claims the UK and US are in the grip of an IT skills shortage, the number of people being accepted for IT apprenticeships has fallen by one third - with less one in 10 applicants securing places.
Jacqui Hogan's insight:

This fills me with dismay. At a time when, apparently, we have a major IT skill shortage, how can we get more people onto the first rung of the IT ladder.  I truly thought this was a great solution. Is the quality of applicants really so sub-standard, or is there a major mis-match of expectations?

Underperforming, yet still paid a bonus: 2015 National Management Salary Survey results - CMI

Underperforming, yet still paid a bonus: 2015 National Management Salary Survey results - CMI | Cocreative Management Snips | Scoop.it
A new survey of 72,206 employees in 317 UK organisations shows an endemic pay-for-poor-performance culture in UK business.

Via Bay Jordan
Jacqui Hogan's insight:

What does this say about our leadership function if we reward poor management as well as good. I guess you get what you pay for and, if your're paying for poor management - that's what we'll get.

Truly sad.

Bay Jordan's curator insight, June 6, 8:09 AM

This survey clearly indicates that the term bonus is widely misused. It has become an integral part of an inflated remuneration package that  completely contravenes the concept of "incentive remuneration" or "performance related pay" that it ostensibly denotes. Perhaps this is even further evidence of the point made by Daniel Pink and others that incentives actually only work for simple, mechanical tasks. If so, when are we going to recognise this and put an end to this increasingly prevalent con?

Diversity in tech: 10 data points you should know

Diversity in tech: 10 data points you should know | Cocreative Management Snips | Scoop.it
There is a glaring diversity problem in the tech industry. Here are 10 facts that can help put the issue in perspective.

Although this is aimed at the US, lack of diversity is a problem for the UK too. According to figures, only 12% of people working in tech are women. And its getting worse. This is down from 15% the year before. What's going on?

We need a diverse workforce to give us the greatest pool of talent. Diversity gives us access to more ideas, more skills and more experience. If we want to be technology backwater, then fine. But if we want to be a technology leader, then we'd better do something about this.
