If everyone was civil to everyone else, and respected that everyone's views were equally valid to their own (however crazy you may think they are in private), the world would be a much nicer place.

 

Being civil costs nothing, and gives you a good feeling. So why are so many people incivil? I know that, sometimes, being civil, can get you 'slapped down', ignored or rebuffed. But if we all tried to be as civil as possible, even these incivil people would eventually get it! Wouldn't they?

British business growth is being undermined from within by widespread mistrust of senior managers, according to a new report published today.
Jacqui Hogan's insight:
Totally agree. There is way too much attention placed on 'leadership' and not enough on management delivery. Which is what most middle managers are expected to do. Middle management is often the least appreciated, most put-upon and least invested in part of the organisation. Leaders need to involve their middle managers in the strategic decision making, and then support them if they want to succeed. If they don't do this, middle managers will not trust them and won't perform. If they don't perform, neither will the rest of the organisation.

If you aren't already managed by a millennial, chances are you soon will be as these young workers quickly take on leadership roles in corporate America.
Jacqui Hogan's insight:
What really bugs me about articles like this is the idea that just because people were born roughly at the same time, they will all be the same. Human experience varies widely. Much more widely than mere age. 

I've managed people older than me and been managed by people younger than me. the difference was confidence and competence every time. Some younger people don't understand the technology (how ever much they might use it), and some older people really get it. It isn't about pigeon holing into 'millennials' or 'baby boomers'. It is about valuing individuals for their unique knowledge and experience. Yes, individuals. Management is about getting the most from individuals, not treating them all the same. Or worse, treating one age group differently than another! 

We should all be flexible, regardless of age, to survive in the workplace today. But it isn't only millennials who can do this.

How crazy is it that we still equate success with being present? Surely the most important thing is what is produced?

I know I bang on about presenteeism being a facet of old management, but I'd thought that increased working away from the office would make this a thing of the past. Clearly not. Or at least, not yet. Do we really have to wait until the Millennials are in charge before this happens?

Reports of forced or sneaky upgrades from earlier Windows versions is probably not the Windows 10 experience Microsoft wants to talk about.

If you are running Windows 7 or 8, be aware that Windows 10 may automatically install itself on your PC too. 

I was pretty mad when Microsoft installed Windows 10, without authorisation, on one of my PCs. Don't get me wrong, I love Windows 10, but I like to plan my upgrades e.g. doing a full backup first. Apparently, Microsoft have change the status of 10 to 'recommended'. This means that if you auto install recommended updates, as most of us do, you will now get Windows 10. This is not a trivial upgrade. You can roll it back, but this isn't foolproof. 

Badly done Microsoft.

You’ll no doubt have heard about new data protection rules - allegedly tougher than the current UK Data Protection Act 1998 – which were agreed in Brussels last December, becoming enforceable in two years’ time, known as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).

As the UK carves out a new economic future following the vote to leave the EU, ensuring everyone has the skills to compete is more important than ever. Yet acute skills shortages are holding back businesses across all regions and many sectors, including manufacturing, construction and professional services. That’s according to this year’s CBI/Pearson Education and Skills survey published today.

Well, then businesses should be prepared to train people! It's only going to worse as we limit immigration. Having said that, we should want to grow our own skilled people anyway.

It does make me wonder what students are learning in Universities though. Are their courses no longer teaching useful skills?

There is NO justification for the levels of executive pay we now see. I've heard the argument that 'we have to pay this to get good people', but this has become a self fulfilling act. It also implies that good people are only motivated by outrageous financial reward! Which is rubbish. Good people CARE about the organisation they lead. 

 I have absolutely no problem with people who start a company themselves and reap the rewards when they succeed. Anyone who has started a company will know the effort etc. that goes into this. Not do I have a problem with people who come into a flagging company and make it great. What I abhor are the greedy who 'negotiate' a short term appointment at great cost to the company. I also abhor the feeble company executives who allow this to happen. Shame on you most of all.
