Incivility

Incivility | Cocreative Management Snips | Scoop.it

Via Ron McIntyre
Jacqui Hogan's insight:

If everyone was civil to everyone else, and respected that everyone's views were equally valid to their own (however crazy you may think they are in private), the world would be a much nicer place.

Being civil costs nothing, and gives you a good feeling. So why are so many people incivil? I know that, sometimes, being civil, can get you 'slapped down', ignored or rebuffed. But if we all tried to be as civil as possible, even these incivil people would eventually get it! Wouldn't they?

Gartner analysts suggest you keep a close eye on the items listed in its latest trend report. Michael Kassner examines the technologies on the list and finds a common thread: cloud.
Jacqui Hogan's insight:

Always an interesting read. Some of this is 'same-old, same-old' stuff e.g. Cloud/client computing. But there are 4 new items that are worth looking at, including risk-based security. Gartner is suggesting that security will be based much more on individual risk assessment as we re-assess what security and protection actually means.

How I Got Zapped, or 3 Keys to Zappos Cultural Success

How I Got Zapped, or 3 Keys to Zappos Cultural Success | Cocreative Management Snips | Scoop.it

“Last week, I had the privilege of taking a behind the scenes tour of Zappos and speaking with several of their top leaders.”

Via Ron McIntyre
Jacqui Hogan's insight:

2 Zappos in one week! Earlier this week at an HR forum, I met someone who had a tour of Zappos a few weeks earlier. They came away full of praise for their management approach - especially their open attitute to empowerment. Is their approach a step too far? While it may look very open and flexible, it is quite bureacratic with it's 'circles' . I worry that it is great for those who shout loudly, but not so good for the introverts (or even those who hate loud music).

Or do you think you could implement it in your company?

Interesting findings. Do they perhaps indicate that we assume too much and believe our perceptions are fact? You could say the bottom-line is the continuing perpetuation of a communication gap between senior managers and workers; which in itself may be indicative of the fact that senior managers are not leaders.

Entrepreneurs lose £14,000 on each bad hire - CMI

Entrepreneurs lose £14,000 on each bad hire - CMI | Cocreative Management Snips | Scoop.it
A lack of applicants with the right skills has been blamed for a rash of bad hiring in the SME community, according to a new study commissioned by Sandler Training.
Jacqui Hogan's insight:

When you think of the impact recruiting the wrong person has, it is really surprising how inexperienced many SME bosses are. Many managers in larger organisations are equally bad, but the impact is rather less. Many rely on recruitment companies, but forget that those companies are trying to get people into jobs. They don't have to live with the consequences.

UK: Thames Valley LEP demands improved broadband connectivity | CASNE

UK: Thames Valley LEP demands improved broadband connectivity | CASNE | Cocreative Management Snips | Scoop.it

The SME forum for the Thames Estuary Valley Local Enterprise Partnership (TEV LEP) has announced its objectives this week as it re-formed.

Head of business in the region met to identify the most pressing issues that affect the TEV LEP community.

Faster broadband access was a priority for many businesses, and take up in the Thames estuary is higher than many other areas.

Rapid take up is, in fact, a cause for concern for members of the forum, as they warned other areas may receive more investment in broadband infrastructure before their area.

Amanda Gee, Chairman of the SME forum and MD of Berkshire Media Group, said: “We were shocked to find that some SMEs report they actually have better connectivity in their homes than in their business spaces.

“We … believe widening access to superfast broadband across the region is vitally important as better access to broadband enables SMEs to create operational efficiencies in the way they work.”
