5 tips to better understand millennial managers

5 tips to better understand millennial managers | Cocreative Management Snips | Scoop.it
If you aren't already managed by a millennial, chances are you soon will be as these young workers quickly take on leadership roles in corporate America.
Jacqui Hogan's insight:
What really bugs me about articles like this is the idea that just because people were born roughly at the same time, they will all be the same. Human experience varies widely. Much more widely than mere age.

I've managed people older than me and been managed by people younger than me. the difference was confidence and competence every time. Some younger people don't understand the technology (how ever much they might use it), and some older people really get it. It isn't about pigeon holing into 'millennials' or 'baby boomers'. It is about valuing individuals for their unique knowledge and experience. Yes, individuals. Management is about getting the most from individuals, not treating them all the same. Or worse, treating one age group differently than another!

We should all be flexible, regardless of age, to survive in the workplace today. But it isn't only millennials who can do this.

IDG Connect – InfoShot: Is ‘presenteeism’ at odds with tech?

IDG Connect – InfoShot: Is ‘presenteeism’ at odds with tech? | Cocreative Management Snips | Scoop.it
New research from Ricoh reveals nearly 70% of young workers stay later than necessary in the office to appear to be working harder.
Jacqui Hogan's insight:
How crazy is it that we still equate success with being present? Surely the most important thing is what is produced?

I know I bang on about presenteeism being a facet of old management, but I'd thought that increased working away from the office would make this a thing of the past. Clearly not. Or at least, not yet. Do we really have to wait until the Millennials are in charge before this happens?

Should businesses abandon the Myers-Briggs test? - | Cocreative Management Snips | Scoop.it
50 million people have taken the Myers-Briggs personality test. What have they really learned?
Jacqui Hogan's insight:
Well Yes, and No. I've found these tests useful mainly for starting a discussion about difference. When people understand difference, they start treating each other better and as individuals. I mainly work with IT people and they love measurement.

Summer Fridays: 9 pros and cons

Summer Fridays: 9 pros and cons | Cocreative Management Snips | Scoop.it
What managers should consider when deciding whether to release employees early from their weekly labors
Jacqui Hogan's insight:

In my experience, this works best as an occasion treat. Any more frequent, and people start to see it as part of their regular reward system, and it ceases to be a motivator.

Don't forget to give people a little notice though. Anyone with children (or other dependants) or after work commitments, may need to make alternative arrangements making this actually a disincentive for them.

Should It Matter If Our Workplace Managers Are Leaders Too?

Should It Matter If Our Workplace Managers Are Leaders Too? | Cocreative Management Snips | Scoop.it
There’s an entire industry built around training managers to be great leaders, and why not? It makes sense that the person tasked with managing a team should
Jacqui Hogan's insight:
I get SO frustrated by discussions about leadership and management. We really need to develop and respect great managers much more than we do. Managers are responsible for making the execution happen. To do that they need leadership skills of a different kind to true 'top of the organisation' leaders. Managers do not just 'administer' at the bidding of some gung-ho leader. Truly successful managers have many of the same skills, especially those of motivation, inspiration and creativity. We have become great at training and developing so-called leaders and are still rubbish at creating and developing great managers. Without managers, few leaders would achieve anything. And if you think about it, we need many more good managers than we do leaders.
