Why Facebook's News Feed Changes Are A Step Too Far

Why Facebook's News Feed Changes Are A Step Too Far | Moore Interaction | Scoop.it

So I wrote about the changes that Facebook has been making to brand pages a couple of weeks ago and how it’s really starting to screw over brands by making them pay twice for visibility. I’ve been seeing more and more blog posts about it and noticing the engagement and reach levels slip even further in the last couple of weeks so I decided to run a test using our own Facebook page to see if things were as bad as I thought they were. The results show just how far Facebook has gone in changing how the news feed works for brands and at the bottom of it all is money.

YouTube Talent War Rages With Millennials' Viewing Up For Grabs - Videonuze

The WSJ is reporting today that YouTube is now offering some of its most popular video creators bonuses in exchange for signing exclusive multiyear deals. The new offers are on top of previously reported deals to underwrite programming for the same creators. All of this is happening primarily in response to pitches ex-Hulu CEO Jason Kilar is making to the same YouTube creators, to provide his new company Vessel with an exclusive 3-day window for these creators' new videos.

Nicky Moore's insight:

".... Facebook is also becoming a bona fide YouTube contender, leveraging its massive audience and sharing power. In September, Facebook said its video views pushed above 1 billion per day, with 65% of them on mobile devices. One Facebook success that gained a lot of notice was Beyonce's VMA prep video, which drove 2.4 million views in the first 4 hours on Facebook and just a few thousand on YouTube."

Television's game-changing moment has come: Netflix enters the fray

Television's game-changing moment has come: Netflix enters the fray | Moore Interaction | Scoop.it
Nicky Moore's insight:

"...Better Call Saul, which would have gone to free-to-air or pay TV in Australia, will go to Stan. And the third season of House of Cards, Netflix's critically exalted flagship drama, will be now be held back from Foxtel so it can premiere on Netflix's Australian service. The net effect is that traditional players, though not competing for dollars out of the purse of their audience in the same way, will have to deal with an aggressive play for exclusive access to US studio content, and the best local program ideas."

Netflix wants to bring personalization to mobile devices
Nicky Moore's insight:

People watch video differently on their smart phones than TV, explained Netflix Design Director Dantley Davis onstage at Gigaom’s Roadmap conference, so the design and user interface has to reflect that. Mobile users tend to check their phones about 150 times a day and spend around 10 minutes tops watching video streams, which is obviously not conducive to the roughly hour-long episodes of Orange is the New Black.

Virtual Reality Storytelling Is Trending in Hollywood: Felix & Paul Studios Leading the Charge
Nicky Moore's insight:

“Forget about cinema and the language of cinema. It's a totally new medium. There are elements of traditional filmmaking that integrate into VR but as a filmmaker, you have to start from scratch. The viewer isn't watching a film, they're part of it. You have to take that into consideration or else it becomes boring. You can't treat the viewer like a viewer. You have to intensify the emotional experience because they have an enhanced sense of awareness.”
