Moodle, the LRS? Getting Started With xAPI Learning Record Stores [UPDATED]

Moodle, the LRS? Getting Started With xAPI Learning Record Stores [UPDATED] | Moodling | Scoop.it
Learning Record Stores (LRS) are the heart of the tracking process of learning using the xAPI standard. xAPI allows systems, including Moodle and compatible LMS, to develop guidance for learning content. Unlike SCORM, the de facto EdTech standard, it covers both content and performance, making it possible to compare learning outcomes.

LRS are a response to the need to place resulting xAPI-compliant data about student behavior in a central location. Since xAPI is platform agnostic, an LRS can be thought of independently from the LMS. Of course, for learning organizations with an overarching LMS solution, it makes sense to keep LRS and LMS together. Organizations using proprietary LMS, however, might want to take advantage of this independence and adopt an LRS as their private learning evidence (and know-how) repository. While this is not a problem with Moodle, as it was designed to protect data ownership, the concept of “LRS independence” helps define an organizational strategy about performance, behavior tracking, and evidence-based learning interventions.

LRS can work with both Open and proprietary LMS, or with no LMS at all. This opens up new ways of thinking about learning. Valuable experiences can happen outside the LMS. Video games, for example, are often associated with a broad set of skills, from motor development and visual contrast sensitivity, to attention and memory, or even to fighting depression. Connecting them to an LRS through xAPI would give weight to these claims to the point of considering video games as part of a learning plan. LRS could be helpful for Moodle and other LMS too, as they would provide comparable feedback about the tools and activities. In the example of video games, LRS could provide quantifiable insight about what makes a learning experience the most engaging.

Latest H5P for Moodle Upgrade Propels Interactivity Collaboration (And More H5P News)

Latest H5P for Moodle Upgrade Propels Interactivity Collaboration (And More H5P News) | Moodling | Scoop.it
The Moodleverse has spoken, and the H5P Core team has listened. Over the past few weeks, the Norway-based developers have made key improvements to the H5P plugin for Moodle, one of the fastest and easiest ways to add interactivity to a Moodle course. Even though the Moodle plugin is younger than its WordPress or Drupal counterparts, team engineer Svein-Tore Griff With assured us Moodle is getting the best attention it can get.

In fact, the April update, version 1.1, is “the first step of the H5P Hub”, an attempt to create a comprehensive interface for educators, designers and programmers, to deploy H5P content right within Moodle. Starting with 1.1, H5P users will see regular refinements in both functionality and usability. Over time, we will witness further options to create and collaborate on H5P-based interaction design, thanks to the “H5P Hub”.

The core of the update is a revamped content type interface. Now, the selection menu provides item descriptions and icons, with the choice to see more information on each type. It will place on top content types used before.

The H5P Core team vision for an “H5P Hub” of Open Educational Resources (OER) looks to allow users to share content with other H5P users, whether they are workin on Moodle or other platforms.

Want to add interactivity to your boring PDF files? Check out this awesome Plugin

Want to add interactivity to your boring PDF files? Check out this awesome Plugin | Moodling | Scoop.it
You might have created a lot of study material and published it in the form of PDF files but your students are not finding it interesting. How you can make those boring PDF files into interesting, interactive and more engaging content resource?

Today, I am going to show you how you can convert your existing PDF files into creative, fun-filled interactive activities in your Moodle course. Mask is a new activity type plugin for Moodle which is developed by Edunao – Moodle partner from France. The Moodle plugin is compatible with all Moodle versions from 2.7 to 3.2.

The intention behind the development of Mask plugin is to offer a simple solution for teaching staff to create an interactive experience from existing PDF files by converting them into images using the pdf2svg library. The teacher can upload their PDF file to Moodle, lay down masks that obscure parts of the underlying document and add questions for the students to answer to make the masks disappear.

Before proceeding further, please note that this plugin needs additional pdf2svg application which is available as a standard debian and ubuntu Linux package and is also freely available for Microsoft Windows and Mac OSX.

The Impact Of A Moodle Theme On Learning

The Impact Of A Moodle Theme On Learning | Moodling | Scoop.it

Moodle is the base of technology-aided learning across schools and universities worldwide. As a result, a large number of developers have flocked to this platform, to contribute their ideas and become a part of the community. The “Moodleverse” today has tons of developers contributing themes and plugins on a regular basis.

Have you ever wondered how these developments could be affecting your end users, the instructors, and enrolled students? As the face of the interaction, choosing a Moodle theme is a task that demands extreme care.

Let us discuss the impact of Moodle themes on learning.

Themes add an attractive, even captivating, look to an LMS. They better the user experience, differentiating it from the otherwise-boring interface of any management system.

Moodle is no different. A good theme will engage your students and help them stay focused, as you will learn in this article.

There are two main factors that affect a theme’s impact on the audience:

1. User Interface (UI)
2. User eXperience (UX)
