Moodle and the development of abilities in a blended course (in Spanish) with Marisol Patterson, Maria Cristina, Nuñez Salazar

Using Moodle to Teach Writing Skills and ESL Teacher Training Content Online Class by MMVC11

Using Moodle to Teach Writing Skills and ESL Teacher Training Content Online Class by MMVC11 | Moodlemoot | Scoop.it

Using Moodle to Teach Writing Skills and ESL Teacher Training Content and in the Same Course with Dr. Christel Broady

Many graduate students enter their programs with mediocre academic writing skills. Further, they are often unable to correctly comprehend instructions and rubrics that are provided to them to guide them in their work. As a matter of fact, many graduate students have trouble following written instructions and using APA style. In online environments the lack of language skill can have grave consequences for the progress of enrolled students.

This is particularly troubling if observed in those candidates who are seeking to teach proper academic English to ESL (students with home languages other than English in their homes) students in the United States. However, even with low writing skills, the rigor of content preparation makes it impossible to require additional graduate coursework in writing development. Thus, writing MUST be part of any teacher preparation course taught face to face or online.

In this presentation, participants will learn how writing skills can successfully be scaffolded and built into an existing content ESL content course without compromising the integrity of content delivery. The presenter will share one model of a three credit hour ESL course, ESL Assessment, in which writing has been built into every weekly activity so that the final paper/project will be generated with much higher quality than in courses where writing is not guided throughout the course. The writing process and feedback to students will be presented along with student evaluations and feedback about how they felt about the process.

Mobile Devices to Develop Communication Skills Among Tertiary Students Online Class by MMVC11

Mobile Devices to Develop Communication Skills Among Tertiary Students Online Class by MMVC11 | Moodlemoot | Scoop.it

Using Mobile Devices to Develop Communication Skills Among Tertiary Level Students by Dr. Revathi Viswanathan

The paper aims to highlight the need for using mobile devices to promote language learning in a traditional classroom. It would describe the short study carried out by the presenter, in which tertiary level students were encouraged to use the mobile devices like 3G mobile phones, Smart phones, Laptop and Digital camera for recording their presentations. The evaluation of the presentations followed by a discussion with the students highlighted the advantages in using the tools for promoting communicative ability among students. In other words, it was evident that students could make effective presentations and perform with confidence by using the devices. Moreover, students could self-assess themselves about their performance and also share the presentations with the teacher and peers very easily. In this context, it is worthwhile to mention that the presenter too could gain insight on the use of the devices for supplementing teaching materials beyond the classroom, from this short study.

Embedding Librarian and Library Components in Moodle Courses Online Class by MMVC11

Embedding Librarian and Library Components in Moodle Courses Online Class by MMVC11 | Moodlemoot | Scoop.it

Embedding Librarian and Library Components in Moodle Courses with Dr. Indira Koneru

Embedded librarianship enables a librarian connect with and guide the students through the information (re)search process. We can create and manage library-related discussion board threads; post relevant links to course-related resources, databases, e-books and information literacy tutorials. Using discussion boards, we can post content or upload files that explain the research process from topic selection through citing sources, sending announcements of research techniques to help students solve their current information problems (Burke, J. & Tumbleson, B., 2011).

In order to establish the needed presence in the Moodle courses, we need to add Librarian role to the existing list of roles and define the role to be played. Creating a librarian role in Moodle enables librarians not only provide ‘point of need’ services to learners but also manage, blocks, activities and files and start new discussions. Librarian can access the course forums and add a library discussion/Ask-the-Librarian forum and monitor the library-related discussions and other discussion boards. Embedding information researching tutorials within the course enables learners improve their research skills. Librarians can evaluate student’s information research skills, in collaboration with the faculty.

Me-Portfolios: Putting the Me in Me-Learning Online Class by MMVC11

Me-Portfolios: Putting the Me in Me-Learning Online Class by MMVC11 | Moodlemoot | Scoop.it

Subsequently he has conducted research and produced numerous publications. Vance's blogs and feeds are linked from http://adVancEducation.blogspot.com

The presenter has been teaching a course on multiliteracies and revising it for a number of iterations over the past several years now. One recent innovation was to set evaluation of the course by means of ePortfolios. Here they are called “Me-Porfolios” to call attention to their constructivist nature. The presentation describes the multiliteracies course and how it features a MOOC approach and berry-bush supermarket presentation rather than prescribed guidance through course components. User choice in material to be covered makes it logical to encourage participants to adopt Me-Porfolios in (1) specifying their own course objectives and outcomes as they orient in the course; (2) presenting their individually tailored plan of achieving those objectives, and ; (3) documenting through an online portfolio the deliverables prepared in showcasing those outcomes. The presenter has found it wise to model e-portfolios to the participants as well as identify successful examples of e-portfolios. This presentation covers the literature on e-portfolios as presented in the course and shows the portal linking the Me-Portfolios prepared by the participants in the most recent rendition of the course.
