Managing Add-ons in Moodle 2.5

Managing Add-ons in Moodle 2.5 | Moodlicious | Scoop.it
Now with Moodle 2.5 has take this feature to its next natural step, and enables a site admin to search for and install plugins from the Moodle Plugin Directory directly rather than having to upload via FTP. It is also possible to upload a zip of a plugin and not just pull from the plugins directory.
Matt Gleeson's curator insight, May 30, 1:06 AM

A welcome addition, if for nothing else but convenience when trialling that new batch of plugins that have sparked your curiosity

Tim's blog: Performance-testing Moodle

Tim's blog: Performance-testing Moodle | Moodlicious | Scoop.it

When your software is too slow, you need measurements to tell you which are the slow bits. Tools that do that are called profilers. One of the better profiling tools for PHP is called XHProf. The good news is that it has already been integrated into Moodle, and there is documenation about getting it working. Basically, you just need to install a PHP extension and turn on some options under Admin -> Development -> Profiling.

OpenBadges User Documentation - MoodleDocs

OpenBadges User Documentation - MoodleDocs | Moodlicious | Scoop.it

This document describes how to use openbadges feature developed by TotaraLMS.

The code is available on github at totara/openbadges. You can use it to install your own site (please don't use this code on a production site yet, this is still work in progress!), or you can try out our test site at openbadgestotara. This test site has the external backpack connections and admin access disabled, but you can play around as a teacher (to create badges) or a student (to earn them).

Patric Lougheed's insight:

Note: This documentation is due to be added to the new 2.5 docs wiki very soon.

Moodle Mobile Beta now available from Google Play | Moodlicious | Scoop.it
We are pleased to finally introduce the Beta version of the new official cross-platform Moodle Mobile app!

Our Moodle Mobile app is a HTML5-based client that connects to an installed Moodle server. It does not try to replicate everything that Moodle does - we are focussed on providing features that are most useful on a standalone app, such as offline access to content, messaging and notifications.

Collapsed Topics for Moodle 2.4.1 released

I've updated Collapsed Topics for Moodle 2.4.1, available from https://moodle.org/plugins/pluginversion.php?id=2149

This is a substantial update incorporating the new features of:

+ Custom capabilities 'format/topcoll:changelayout', 'format/topcoll:changecolour', 'format/topcoll:changetogglealignment' and 'format/topcoll:changetoggleiconset' to editing teachers and managers such that site administrators can choose to disable functionality through roles if they wish.

+ Icon sets where you can choose what set of control icons are appropriate on a per course basis. And choose if 'hover' functionality is applied.

+ Moved all 'tcconfig.php' default functionalty to 'Site Administration -> Plugins -> Course formats -> Collapsed Topics' so that defaults can be changed by the administrator from within Moodle without resorting to code changes.

This should give you more choice and reduce (if not eliminate) the requirement to change code on the server for your particular configuration.

New Moodle a hit with Concordia University pilot users

New Moodle a hit with Concordia University pilot users | Moodlicious | Scoop.it
As part of the pilot phase of the new system, eight Concordia professors and their students were actively using Moodle 2.3 during the winter term. For Walcir Cardoso, a pilot tester, associate professor of education and self-professed fan of all things Moodle, the upgraded system has transformed the way he teaches. With the addition of automatic blogs and wikis, class interaction has reached a new level. Students use the blog feature, which can be set to private or public, as a space to post their notes and comments, as well as video (which is now embedded) and links that support class discussion. “In turn, I take the topics they’ve written about and videos they’ve posted to complement what we’re learning in class. It’s become a valuable part of the learning process,” says Cardoso.

A Comparison of Learning Management System Accessibility

Learning management systems have become the primary delivery platform in most higher education systems for course-related activities such as lecture presentations, readings and assignments, discussions, and quizzes. Until a few years ago, access for learners and instructors with disabilities was either poorly supported or not considered at all in many popular tools. Due to lack of, or limited, accessibility in learning management systems, students were not able to fully or independently participate in key course activities.

At CSUN 2013, we presented a high-level overview of the results of our new evaluation, along with side-by-side comparisons that support our recommendations for improving learning management systems for users with disabilities.
