Moodle 3.1 adds support for external Antivirus tool

Moodle 3.1 adds support for external Antivirus tool | moodle3 | Scoop.it

Moodle has supported ClamAV from the era of Moodle 1.3 and by default, ClamAV was the only antivirus tool available for Moodle sites. In Moodle 3.1, a new plugin type is added to incorporate external Antivirus plugins developer by different service providers (see our previous coverage over the Moodle Tracker issue here.)

The Antivirus plugin implements the virus scanning functionality in Moodle. The new type of plugins will allow the external contributors to develop plugins for different antivirus products and extend existing antivirus functionality to different areas of Moodle. By default, ClamAV will be available in Moodle core as antivirus tool.

Making “old” Moodle forums read-only

Making “old” Moodle forums read-only | moodle3 | Scoop.it

Recently during one of our training events, a participant had a need to prevent students from posting to forums from earlier in a course.

The course in question ran over a number of months and included several forum activities addressing specific topics at different stages in the course.

It was difficult for the tutor to devote time to monitoring all of the forums within the course; the tutor, therefore, wanted to “lock” the forums so that, whilst students should still be able to review the discussion threads from earlier forums, they should not be able to post to them.

In Moodle, whilst you can control when a forum can be accessed (using the Restrict access functionality), there are no options in the Forum settings page to control when people are allowed to post to the forum.

The solution to this participant’s specific need lay, therefore, within overriding the Student role’s permissions within an activity. The solution is explained below:

1. As a teacher, when you are ready to prevent your students from posting to a forum, click on the forum activity from the course page.

2. In the Administration block, select Forum administration > Permissions

3. From the Advanced role override drop-down list, select Student

4. For the Reply to posts and Start new discussions capabilities, set the Permission to Prevent.

5. Scroll down and click on the Save changes.

6. Students will now be able to access the forum activity as before, but will no longer be able to post nor create new discussions in that particular forum.

Check Out This Substantial Update To The Essential Theme

Check Out This Substantial Update To The Essential Theme | moodle3 | Scoop.it

Recently, in the Moodle.org forums, Gareth Barnard announced a substantial update to the Essential Theme for Moodle 2.9 and 3.0. There are a good deal of both new features and fixes for both versions.

Gareth provided highlights to the update as follows:

- He’s done a good deal of work making the header look better. This includes a much bigger profile image when you’re at the top of the page and the navbar is below the logo or social icon area.
- He’s also put a dotted line in-between the social icons so that they don’t look like they’re smashed together.
- The style guide (a cool new feature added in the last update) can now be accessed without logging on at yoursite/theme/essential/pages/styleguide.php.
- He’s implemented a number of fixes to fonts and colors for better accessibility.
- He’s given the logo a width setting so that it is more customizable.
- He’s made it so that the footer moves to the bottom (and actually a bit further) where the content on the page would leave space below the footer.

Stealth activities which were requested in Moodle tracker a long time back since 2006 are coming soon in Moodle and currently under peer review process. A prototype to test out the functionality of stealth activities is setup at Moodle Prototype site here.

Stealth activities are those activities which are accessible to students, but not listed on the course front page. The course creator will manually put a link to the activity somewhere else in the course and the activities would be available by following URL but hidden from the course page.

The Death of Testing and the Rise of Learning Analytics

The Death of Testing and the Rise of Learning Analytics | moodle3 | Scoop.it

Some of us have assessed the situation, & the prognosis is not good for the test. We might be witnessing the death of testing.

I know that it is sad news for some, but more than a few of us have assessed the situation, and the prognosis is not good for our friend (or perhaps the arch enemy to others of us), the test. We might be witnessing the death of testing. Tests are not going away tomorrow or even next year, but their value will fade over the upcoming years until, finally, tests are, once and for all, a thing of the past. At least that is one possible future.

Moodle Moot 2016 Day 2 of 3

Moodle Moot 2016 Day 2 of 3 | moodle3 | Scoop.it
Day 2 kicked off with the annual keynote by Martin Dougiamas. It was interesting to see how Moodle Could has been expanded to include ad-free , higher user packages. This makes Moodle Cloud an attractive solution for schools looking for a low-cost SAAS Moodle. The Moodle Association which was announced this time last year is now fully under way and it was great to see this gaining traction. We were also taught the valuable lesson of not “Moodling whilst Driving!”.

The roadmap for Moodle 3.1 is exciting. When Moodle 3.0 was released, it felt more like 2.10, and it was met with little fanfare. However, 3.1 is really the version to look forward to, and the version I’m sure HQ wanted to release if it wasn’t for versioning numbers getting in the way :)

Learning Plans and Competencies (due in 3.1) have been a long time coming but one of the most exciting things coming to core I’ve seen in a long while. The possibilities with this are amazing, I can think of so many use cases.
