Moodle (acronym for Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment) is an open source Learning Management System (LMS ) or a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE ). When I activated the Google drive repository in our moodle 2.6 instance last week, it was not immediately clear to me what we were seeing and how things were behaving.

I had to register the moodle site with Google to activate the GD plugin. This made sense.

It took me two tries to create the definition in Google, I missed the key part about sharing the moodle callback file with the Google definition. This was not conceptually difficult either, I was just lazy and missed the first time.

Once the integration was successful, and I could see the new Google Drive option in my moodle, when browsing for a file.

Moodle Mobile 3.1 was released at the same time as the core Moodle 3.1 software. The new version contains three new features that many will find useful – the ability to take quizzes offline, the ability to take quizzes on a mobile device and the ability to view lesson plans.

That’s right, mobile users can now download a quiz to their mobile device and attempt the quiz when offline. Students will know a quiz is able to be taken offline by the presense of a cloud icon / download option. There are three criteria a quiz must pass in order to be downloadable. First, it cannot have a time limit. Second, it can only contain questions with deferred feedback. Third, the quiz does not require a network address for identification or other purposes. As noted on the Moodle Doc for offline quizzes, only questions are taken offline, and not the valid responses.

If you’ve been using Moodle for any amount of time, you’ve seen, heard and probably used BigBlueButtonBN Moodle Plugin. It’s integrated into Moodle Cloud. Even Moodle HQ uses it for developer meetings and the like. The plugin is currently ranked #15 in overall downloads and Michael de Raadt recently published a survey of 353 Moodle sites showing 13 percent of sites responded using the BigBlueButtonBN Moodle plugin.

As announced recently via their blog, the team at BigBlueButton are over the moon excited about (finally) releasing version 1.0. Don’t think these guys have been slacking, however. This is the fifteenth release in its seven years of development. The service has been stable and running in production for more than six months with one company hosting over 100,000 live sessions to-date.

Everyone is hotly anticipating the release of Moodle 3.1 on May 23rd and the documentation for the new version is being rolled out as quickly as possible. I was perusing over the documentation for the Assignment module today and was particularly excited to see some of the new features for 3.1 starting to take shape:
Annotating Submissions

By activating the ‘Comment inline’ feature of Assignment, teachers will have the ability to annotate PDFs, docx or odt files. Annotation can be done with a bunch of different tools or comments (depending on what you’re admin has allowed). All saved annotations are available to students as a part of the feedback they receive.

Today I stumbled upon a blog post on E-Learning industry about “5 Reasons To Look For Moodle Alternatives” which are mentioned by the author – Ridvan Aliu. In the post, he mentioned his own experience with Moodle and provided 5 reasons to migrate to other commercial systems like EDUonGo.

Being a strong supporter of Moodle, the points mentioned by Ridvan are not agreeable to me, so I thought to clarify as per my level of understanding with Moodle – Why you shouldn’t look for Moodle alternatives and prefer Moodle over others

Moodle has supported ClamAV from the era of Moodle 1.3 and by default, ClamAV was the only antivirus tool available for Moodle sites. In Moodle 3.1, a new plugin type is added to incorporate external Antivirus plugins developer by different service providers (see our previous coverage over the Moodle Tracker issue here.)

The Antivirus plugin implements the virus scanning functionality in Moodle. The new type of plugins will allow the external contributors to develop plugins for different antivirus products and extend existing antivirus functionality to different areas of Moodle. By default, ClamAV will be available in Moodle core as antivirus tool.

Moodle kids swimming in a bowl with Goldfish and Moodle 3.1Team Moodle has been incredibly busy for the past few months bringing together another major release of Moodle.

Moodle 3.1 wraps a lot of new features together with hundreds of fixes and improvements into a package that we'll be supporting for the next three years, 1.5 years longer than most releases.

I am proud to announce that the most important new feature in this release is the new core support for competencies, which is something we've been talking about and developing in the community for many years. These help when Moodle is used for competency-based education (CBE), "mastery learning" and any technique that involves learning plans based on the things students know, and the things they are yet to know.

Our HQ developers (in collaboration with the community and significant contributions of development and design from the Université de Montréal) have now added strong basic interfaces for these in core, allowing competencies to be determined automatically via coursework or manually by examination of uploaded evidence. However we fully expect these core interfaces to be further extended by the community via plugins and integrations to suit all the many niches where Moodle is used.

This release also marks the first time a new feature has been chosen by the Moodle Users Association. In this case it was the Recycle Bin, a plugin written by Skylar Kelty at the University of Kent, now reviewed and included as a standard feature in Moodle 3.1.

A big thank you to all our Quality Assurance (QA) testers, as listed in the Testing credits, who helped us achieve a Moodle 3.1 test pass rate of 100% in 3½ weeks. Congratulations to everyone who received a Moodle tester 2016 badge for running three or more tests in the QA cycle.

Thanks also to all our developers, who helped with fixing bugs identified through testing, so that tests could be reset and run again as quickly as possible. Thus we are all ready for the 3.1 release next week!

BigBlueButton, the most popular open source web conferencing system for online learning, has been updated to a new version 1.0 with improved features.

In a recent announcement on the BigBlueButton project blog, the BBN team announced the release of the new stable version after testing the beta version for more than 6 months.

The major changes in the new version of BBN are:

- New Polling,
- Emoticons,
- Improved Video Dock

In addition to the above features, this new release saw significant advancements in stability, usability, accessibility, leaning management systems (LMS) integration, and design wins.

BBN uses WebRTC for very high quality audio and this new version detects the loss of Internet connection (which can occur on a wireless network) and automatically attempts to reconnect the client and audio.
