Moodle plugins: MindMap Course

Moodle plugins: MindMap Course | Moodle Best LMS | Scoop.it

WIth MindMap Course, Moodle becomes a first LMS which allows students for using courses through interactive, personalized mindmap. Additionally, it provides features unavailable in standard Moodle so far, which are: 1) graphical presentation of conditional dependencies and 2) distinction of modules where student have problems (and which are near deadline). Map files can be downloaded, they are compatible with Freemind software.

Map is interactive. Users can enter course elements (like sections, modules, lesson and book pages) directly from map. Elements which were not visited by user are distincted with bold font. There are displayed arrows, which describe conditional activity dependencies. Modules, where a particular student has problems, and available time is running out, are appropriately highligthted as well.

Map files can be downloaded and opened in Freemind software, what gives teachers additional features. For example, to create a task for students teacher downloads a map and change it, for example move some elements, add invalid elements, create (or not) a list with elements possible for using. Students task will be getting map to the correct content.

This app requires Java and Flash to work.

Miloš Bajčetić's insight:

IMPORTANT: Map files are stored in /blocks/mindmap/temp/ folder (within the block folder). This folder have to be writeable by the web server process. Temp files are periodically removed via cron script.

VERY IMPORTANT: TO AVOID DATA LEAK, MAKE SURE THAT YOUR WEB SERVER IS INCLUDING .HTACCESS FILE FROM /BLOCKS/MINDMAP/TEMP/ FOLDER. This disables indexing of the folder. You can check this by entering: yourmoodle.com/blocks/midnmap/temp/ in web browser and you should NOT be able to view any files.

Why is Moodle the Best LMS? - EdTechReview™ (ETR)

Why is Moodle the Best LMS? - EdTechReview™ (ETR) | Moodle Best LMS | Scoop.it

Moodle (acronym for Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment) is an open source Learning Management System (LMS ) or a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE ). It is rising in popularity among the educators around the world, as a tool for creating dynamic websites for students. It is open source, since it is customizable, has no contracts or user costs to pay and is widely available for free use. It can be efficiently integrated with your management system and allows you to support personalized learning, which is effective even outside the classroom and encourages the involvement of the broader community of the institution.

Moodle has constantly maintained its top spot among the LMS tools and has been ranked 11th overall among the top 100 tools for learning in 2013 . Many factors have contributed to Moodle being highly successful. On top of being a great LMS, it is also free to use. Teachers can teach their own online courses using this and find it stable and easy to use and being customizable, it fits to its user’s needs with ease.

Moodle has several advantages over other LMSs, here’s the list of a few:

- It is an open source learning platform, which is utilized by millions of people worldwide. This open source nature allows anybody to tinker with its code or add new things. Users can share changes with the Moodle community for others to use for free. All this leads to the extension and reformation of the software.

- It makes use of simple technologies, as a result of which its developers are easy to find.

- It is built on some of the most reliable technologies, such as PHP, MySQL, Apache.

- It has a fully cooperative development model which offers constant scope for improvement by allowing many high quality contributions to acquire new modules, features and enhancements.

- It makes use of the more advanced programming approach, the object-oriented programming which makes its functionality all the more efficient and allows users to proceed at their own pace, as well as customize it according to their needs.

- It focuses on making the learning and teaching experience constructivist. This process encourages the involvement of learners in the learning process, rather than letting them receive knowledge passively. The learning environment becomes more democratic with interactive and student-centered activities.

- It is convenient for educational institutions and organizations for learning and course management.

- It can be quickly deployed in your organization, without the requirement of any extra efforts.

- It is highly cost-effective, since it has a low risk startup and a low initial investment.

- It provides you with fast and reliable updates of information.

- It provides you with regular support, all the time you use it. Its support feature is active twenty four hours a day, seven days a week and addresses to its developers, members and users.

New eBook Explains How to Leverage Moodle 3 for Higher Engagement in Online Courses

New eBook Explains How to Leverage Moodle 3 for Higher Engagement in Online Courses | Moodle Best LMS | Scoop.it
Packt Publishing and veteran pedagogue Susan Smith Nash’s partnership is long-enduring. The third edition of Moodle 3.x Teaching Techniques suggests it.

Moodle 3 has answered many prayers from the Moodle community to improve intuitiveness and usability. It also has increased its integration with mobile and social media. But, as Susan shows, ensuring you have an underlying purpose for your Moodle triggers the true learning power of Moodle’s features.

Susan takes the reader along a narrative of development phases. However, she emphasizes that you should not start anything before answering a simple question: “What do you want students to be able to do at the end of the course?“. Only after defining goals and priorities can a teacher best consider content and path. The book showcases solutions to offer the most motivating activities for a given topic. It suggests ways to fit the solutions to maximize interaction and help between students.

After all, Moodle is Open Source. It supports the idea that communities, more than individual people, build knowledge. Moodle is compatible with new, collective learning experiences.

The book includes brief ideas about pedagogy interchange with creating a Moodle course. While it assumes a basic Moodle skill, the book serves as seasoning practice.

Universal instructional design principles for Moodle | Elias | The International Review of Research in Open and Distributed Learning

Universal instructional design principles for Moodle | Elias | The International Review of Research in Open and Distributed Learning | Moodle Best LMS | Scoop.it
The paper identifies a set of universal instructional design (UID) principles appropriate to distance education (DE) and tailored to the needs of instructional designers and instructors teaching online. These principles are then used to assess the accessibility level of a sample online course and the availability of options in its LMS platform (Moodle) to increase course accessibility. Numerous accessibility-sensitive plug-in modules are found to be available to Moodle users, though relatively few features were included in the sample course analysed. This may be because they have not been made available to instructors at the institutional level. The paper offers a series of recommendations to improve the accessibility of online DE to learners with diverse abilities, disabilities, and needs.

Secure your Moodle credentials using the Latch plugin for Moodle

Secure your Moodle credentials using the Latch plugin for Moodle | Moodle Best LMS | Scoop.it

Online credentials theft is moving towards more sophisticated methods which is making it increasingly difficult for users and companies to protect themselves. So, you need some methods/services to reduce the attacks directed at your online services. Latch, a service by ElevenPaths provides your end users to lock the service account or selected features conveniently, when they dont want to use them.

As promoted by the company: latch – The security switch for your digital life is a service to reduce exposure to cyber attacks and adds an extra security layer to your account. Latch gives you the control to “turn off” your online services when you are not connected.

Latch does not affect in any case or in any way the usual operations with an account. It just allows or denies actions over it, acting as an independent extra layer of security that, once removed or without effect, will have no effect over the accounts, that will remain with its original state.

ElevenPaths have introduced a Moodle authentication plugin which allows you to integrate Latch with Moodle. You can pair the Moodle users whom you want to use the plugin.

You can download the plugin from the GitHub page here. Complete instructions for setting up the Latch service with Moodle are mentioned here.

12 Creative Moodle Hacks to Supercharge your Courses

12 Creative Moodle Hacks to Supercharge your Courses | Moodle Best LMS | Scoop.it
When it comes to creating a course in Moodle, we often focus on the outcomes we need to cover and the assessments we want students to complete. And while these two aspects are important, there is another missing factor: the design of the course.

The Financial Times famously commented on the design of big online courses as … so boring you will have ‘blood pouring out of your eyes’. (quote)

The research also points to the need for well-designed, visual courses. In a recent study by Articulate, nearly 40% of learners found their courses boring. Other research points towards gamifying, with 89% responding they would be more engaged if their online course had a point system and was more game-like.

So how can you design your courses to be more visual, creative and engaging to the learner?

Check Out The Enrolmart Moodle Course Shopping Cart

Check Out The Enrolmart Moodle Course Shopping Cart | Moodle Best LMS | Scoop.it
Us Moodlers always welcome ways to streamline work. We are also in the lookout to increase revenue. That is why when we found out about Enrolmart, and its way to do both with one plugin, we had to keep listening.

Enrolmart is a shopping cart plugin for Moodle. Students can buy products and services from inside their course. This can include digital and physical goods, and even other Moodle courses. For teachers it is a great opportunity to offer support to students who might need it. Think course guides, workbooks, even some videos with extra background.

One of the biggest problems in sales is keeping the customer’s impulse. From the moment they decide to buy until they can actually do it a lot can happen: they get distracted, they forget, they decide they don’t have the money… the list is long. Enrolmart helps overcome this issues by placing a shopping cart inside Moodle. In this way, your students can learn about extra content while inside Moodle. If it is in their interest, they can look it up and buy it. If you sell a downloadable product, they will have access to it immediately. And if a student buys a Moodle course, teachers can enroll them instantly. All without leaving the platform!

It is always a hot topic and conversation in whole Moodle community about the major trends in recent years and how they are going to affect Moodle. Stephen Downes – Learning and Performance Support Systems program at the National Research Council shared his presentation about “Extending Moodle“.

The presentation shares some major trends of recent years, how these have impacted Moodle (including a discussion of some Moodle extensions addressing them) and some observations about future trends that will impact how Moodle developers will want to adapt the technology in the future.

The presentation poses the two challenges:

- How can an educational application support, integrate within, and measure the total state?
- How can the learner maintain his/her identity and integrity from environment to environment?

Moodle 3.1: Introducing competency frameworks | eWorks Blog | Moodle Best LMS | Scoop.it
The latest release of Moodle (Version 3.1) provides some powerful new enhancements that will particularly interest educators in the VET sector. The introduction of the long-awaited competency frameworks will provide the flexibility for “clustering” competencies into a single Moodle Course. The application of this new feature is very exciting, where the administrator can now set up site wide competency frameworks that model their organisational capability frameworks or training packages on an RTO scope of registration. They can then create learning plan templates, add competencies to them and assign learning plans to individual selected students or to whole cohorts. In other words Moodle 3.1 will allow easy mapping of multiple competencies in a single course.
