Why is Moodle the Best LMS? - EdTechReview™ (ETR)

Why is Moodle the Best LMS? - EdTechReview™ (ETR) | Moodle Best LMS | Scoop.it

Moodle (acronym for Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment) is an open source Learning Management System (LMS ) or a Virtual Learning Environment (VLE ). It is rising in popularity among the educators around the world, as a tool for creating dynamic websites for students. It is open source, since it is customizable, has no contracts or user costs to pay and is widely available for free use. It can be efficiently integrated with your management system and allows you to support personalized learning, which is effective even outside the classroom and encourages the involvement of the broader community of the institution.

Moodle has constantly maintained its top spot among the LMS tools and has been ranked 11th overall among the top 100 tools for learning in 2013 . Many factors have contributed to Moodle being highly successful. On top of being a great LMS, it is also free to use. Teachers can teach their own online courses using this and find it stable and easy to use and being customizable, it fits to its user’s needs with ease.

Moodle has several advantages over other LMSs, here’s the list of a few:

- It is an open source learning platform, which is utilized by millions of people worldwide. This open source nature allows anybody to tinker with its code or add new things. Users can share changes with the Moodle community for others to use for free. All this leads to the extension and reformation of the software.

- It makes use of simple technologies, as a result of which its developers are easy to find.

- It is built on some of the most reliable technologies, such as PHP, MySQL, Apache.

- It has a fully cooperative development model which offers constant scope for improvement by allowing many high quality contributions to acquire new modules, features and enhancements.

- It makes use of the more advanced programming approach, the object-oriented programming which makes its functionality all the more efficient and allows users to proceed at their own pace, as well as customize it according to their needs.

- It focuses on making the learning and teaching experience constructivist. This process encourages the involvement of learners in the learning process, rather than letting them receive knowledge passively. The learning environment becomes more democratic with interactive and student-centered activities.

- It is convenient for educational institutions and organizations for learning and course management.

- It can be quickly deployed in your organization, without the requirement of any extra efforts.

- It is highly cost-effective, since it has a low risk startup and a low initial investment.

- It provides you with fast and reliable updates of information.

- It provides you with regular support, all the time you use it. Its support feature is active twenty four hours a day, seven days a week and addresses to its developers, members and users.

14 Plugins and growing for Atto Text Editor

14 Plugins and growing for Atto Text Editor | Moodle Best LMS | Scoop.it
One of the great things about TinyMCE was that it was very extensible and came with loads of features already built in. Moodle’s own text editor released with 2.7 is comparatively light in features, but that is slowly changing. Recently released for Atto was the “More Font Colors” plugin which is exactly what it sounds like. Here’s a list of all of the Atto Plugins that you can use (each can be found in the Plugin Database) broken down to strictly text editing and extensions using 3rd party tools,

Moodle plugins: Wiki export

Moodle plugins: Wiki export | Moodle Best LMS | Scoop.it

This plugin adds the ability to export Moodle wikis as either PDFs or epub documents.

It was developed by Davo Smith of Synergy Learning, on behalf of the Judicial Institute for Scotland

Usage

Once the plugin is installed, you can visit a wiki, then click on the new 'Export as epub' or 'Export as PDF' links that appear in the activity administration block (with javascript enabled, similar links are inserted on the top-right corner of the page).

Users with the 'mod/wiki:managewiki' capability also get a 'Sort pages for export' link, that allows them to choose the order in which pages will appear in the export.

There is an additional global setting which allows a copy of any wikis on the site to be sent (as a PDF) to a given email address, whenever they are updated (note, this will not export all wikis on the site the first time it is configured, it only sends those that have been updated since the email address was first entered).

Moodle plugins: Meta-course synchronization to groups

Metasync creates and populates groups in a course based on the enrollment of metalinked courses.

Upon adding a course metalink enrollment method, the plugin creates a group named after the linked course's shortname and adds the enrolled users of the linked course to that group. The plugin also watches enrollments in the linked courses to keep the groups up to date.

Addon: Image drag and drop for Atto

Addon: Image drag and drop for Atto | Moodle Best LMS | Scoop.it
Paul Nicholls has released an addon for the new Atto text editor that streamlines the image upload and insert process for Moodle making it much more like using Gmail or leading edge web-based text editors. According to the addon description:

This plugin automatically uploads images dropped into Atto (from your computer) as though you’d stepped through the process of inserting an image, choosing to upload a new file.

Note that this only works in browsers which support dropping files into the page – IE10+, Firefox, Chrome, Safari and Opera. Other (or older) browsers will typically open the dropped file instead.

Sounds like a great improvement in usability for any Moodle site that’s using Atto. Download and install the plugin for Atto and Moodle 2.7 from https://moodle.org/plugins/view.php?plugin=atto_imagedragdrop

Moodle - PHP - MYSQL - APACHE

How to keep teacher happy, and people using your product? Do not lose their work. Copy the content for them.

To be moodle specific, perform these steps

1. backup the original course, without student data
2. restore the backup, to the teachers category in moodle
3. enroll the account in teacher role
4. make sure the course short name matches external enrollment DB section LMS ID

Moral of the story? If you want people to use the product and feed the beast, help them.  Help them do their work.  Make it easier for them.  Do not make them have to re-doe things.

How to fix: "Cannot find the data record in database table question_multichoice"

How to fix: "Cannot find the data record in database table question_multichoice" | Moodle Best LMS | Scoop.it

I use GIFT format to import most of the question banks that I create or acquire from other sources. It’s a great, easy to use way to add lots of questions to Moodle very quickly. One word of caution though is that before you upload a file you should check your GIFT file in a text editor like Notepad++ to ensure that there are no strange characters included which can cause an error that will stop your import altogether or give you and your students trying to attempt an exam and error such as

Cannot find the data record in database table question_multichoice

So, what’s a strange character and how do you fix that error?

Responsive course using Atto plugins

Responsive course using Atto plugins | Moodle Best LMS | Scoop.it
With Halloween coming up, I thought I would build a quick course on how to preserve a pumpkin using Atto plugins we have built.

Below are two animation showing the course with the browser at two different sizes. The first animation shows the browser wide. This would represent a normal desktop view. The second with the browser pushed narrower, to show how it would look on a mobile phone.

Our Atto plugins were used to build the course. This course shows what can be achieved without the need for third-party authoring tools.

There are some issues when viewing the content in IE. The course works perfectly on all the Apple mobile devices as well as any Android devices.

Moodle plugins: Organizer

Moodle plugins: Organizer | Moodle Best LMS | Scoop.it

The Organizer (mod/organizer) allows participants to subscribe to events, which can be created easily and efficiently by teachers.

The Organizer consists of three tabs:

* Events: provides an overview of all available and past events and allows teachers to create new events, delete and edit existing events, assess events in which people have enrolled and print all selected events.

* Students' view: shows a simplified view of the enrolment page as seen by participants.

* Enrolment status: provides a detailed overview of participants' enrolments. This tab allows teachers to send reminders to students who have not enrolled yet.

Teachers have access to all three tabs, whereas students can only access the second tab "students' view".

Group organizer:

If a group organizer was created, a grouping must be selected in the settings for which the organizer is to be used. As soon as one participant enrols, all other group members are enrolled as well and are notified about time and place of the event.

Note: Students can be enrolled in only one group of this grouping.

Enhance Security for your Site and Users with Unique Login

Enhance Security for your Site and Users with Unique Login | Moodle Best LMS | Scoop.it
Moodle Partner ED-ROM is maintaining this novel Moodle authentication plugin for the community which ensures that all users can only have one active session on your Moodle site. Unique Login, recognizes and prevents two individuals from logging into the same user account on your site simultaneously which can help to prevent two types of issues:

unauthorized access which occurs when a student forgets to logout of their Moodle account (and another user jumps on the same computer)
collusion and other collaborative cheating which can occur when a user willingly shares their credentials with a third party (though this is merely an obstacle since the 3rd party could continue uninhibited as long as they are the sole user)

You can download the supported authentication plugin here: https://moodle.org/plugins/view.php?plugin=auth_uniquelogin.

A dynamic set of criteria, based on the Moodle Activity or Resource that is being created, is used to determine when the completion conditions have been met. Completion conditions may be as broad as the activity being viewed or as detailed as posting/replying a specific number of times to a forum. Once the requirements for the Activity completion settings have been met, the checkbox to the right of the activity name will automatically be checked. Activity Completion also allows for manually marking of this checkbox, allowing users to identify its completion status.
