New Moodle Plugin Category: "Incubating"

New Moodle Plugin Category: "Incubating" | Moodle i Mahara | Scoop.it
The Moodle addon database got a new addition recently, that of a category for projects which are “incubating”. According to the category description,

Moodle plugins listed in this category do not yet meet all the different standards and criteria to be listed in the matching plugins category. They may be eventually re-evaluated and propagated once the detected issues are fixed.

Important Plugins here may requires special attention during the installation, and sometimes even needs hacks to core.

Plugins in this category are excluded from automatic updates. The code here is more likely to break when you upgrade Moodle and we generally do not recommend installing it unless you have Moodle developers on hand to help maintain it.

Think of it as the testing grounds for new Moodle plugins that might do something awesome but also might need additional help in maintaining on your site if you were using it in production. Recently I showcased the Bookmarks (within book chapter) plugin which is available in this category. Three additional plugins now also reside in the category: My Feedback, Exam, and SNA SUNYU.

Each is available to either use at your own risk or to play around with on a non-production site. If you’re a developer you can also offer to help get these plugins out of incubation and into the standard plugin repository where they’ll benefit from automatic updates and install like the rest of the addons.

Setting Up A Moodle Lesson Activity - Super Moodle

Setting Up A Moodle Lesson Activity - Super Moodle | Moodle i Mahara | Scoop.it
The Moodle lesson activity will entail a number of web pages that have been designed for the students to help present a number of activities related to a certain course. The lesson activity might be applied as a substitute of the Book recourse, which is a sequence of content pages. The lessons in Moodle might be categorized and graded using questions that are meant for scoring. The questions might be used basically as a resource of pages that are not graded, or it could be a blend of the two.

Offline Grading in Moodle, a little known feature

Offline Grading in Moodle, a little known feature | Moodle i Mahara | Scoop.it

Floyd Saner (organizer of the Midwest Moots over the past few years) is highlighting the Assignment Module enhancements in Moodle 2.7 and touched on a pretty unknown feature of the Assignment when simple grading is selected for an online text assignment. Did you know that you can do your grading offline (at the beach, at the cabin, on the back of a horse)?

Grading submissions, internet not required.

Read about it here: http://docs.moodle.org/27/en/Assignment_settings#Offline_grading_worksheet

Moodle login using face recognition | Moodle i Mahara | Scoop.it

One of the things missing on my ‘take a photo’ extension to the quiz has been the report at the end. I spent a little time building a report that would pull the photos along with the quiz results. Below is an image showing one result.

The users profile photo is pulled along with the two photos taken while doing the quiz. The first photo is taken before the user can start the quiz. The second photo is taken before the user can submit their attempt.

Q&A With Martin Dougiamas, Founder and CEO of Moodle

Q&A With Martin Dougiamas, Founder and CEO of Moodle | Moodle i Mahara | Scoop.it
ETT: What is the market segment your company is in and who are your core customers?

Although we are often called an LMS, we refer to Moodle as an open source learning platform because we do much more than a strict definition of an LMS can allow. Moodle is currently used in more than 230 countries with more than 70 million users worldwide. The focus of Moodle is to provide educators (individuals, schools, universities or workplace) with the tools to build their own highly customized site for online and blended learning.

In the 12 years since its first version, Moodle has been adopted by many renowned organisations across the globe, including Australia National University, California State Universities, London School of Economics, Google Mount Sinai Hospital, Shell, Mazda, ING, Allianz, and Open University as a few examples.

ETT: How did you come across the problem you’re addressing and how did you define it – what was your process in identifying it?

When I started Moodle, the web was fairly new and was largely a one-way publishing medium. As an Internet developer since 1990, however, I knew a lot more interactivity and collaboration was possible via computers, and I started researching the latest in pedagogy and working on Moodle as a way to blend this into the growing web technology.

ETT: What it is that you’re doing differently than your competitors? And do you expect to develop other differentiators in the future?

Moodle will continue to be an open source learning platform and to try and take open source to new heights.

Unlike many .com companies in the edtech sector who may be driven to produce profit for investors, our main drive is to provide free tools for educators to use as they wish.   Even though we do have a range of commercial services via our Moodle Partners (see moodle.com) all of these are designed to help pay developers to produce our free software.
