Interesting new Display format in Moodle 2.4: TabTopics Format

Interesting new Display format in Moodle 2.4: TabTopics Format | Moodle and Mahara | Scoop.it

There appears to be a new format in Moodle 2.4 called Tab Topics format. It seems similar to the 3rd party plugin we have used in the past called OneTopic but in this case it keeps some of the formatting of your template?

You can choose how many topics fit in the tabs and what you wish to do with hidden topics (always a bonus!)

A silent video to show you what it looks like for a fairly dull revision site.

Oh my - this is very exciting, especially the ability to set styles. It would be great if the styles are linked to the user so that I could keep these as I moved from one course to another.

Office 365 for Education - A2 Plan

Novotronix are the UK leading Microsoft Office 365 for Education Partner
gideonwilliams's insight:

In no way is this a promotion for the company but it does give you a good insight as to Office365 and its potential for schools and colleges.

How it integrates with Moodle is the next big thing to ask. As yet I have not heard of any school/college with this in place and our support company is not yet making plans....

A quick search of Moodle reveals that no-one seems to have this feature in place in Moodle. I know that there used to be one in EduLive, I wonder how different it is to do for 365?

Cohorts in Moodle 2.0

Great video from Mary about site wide groups and works well in conjuction with this article on Moodle.org - http://docs.moodle.org/22/en/Cohorts and this one on synching: http://docs.moodle.org/23/en/Cohort_sync

We set up Cohorts for Moodle and Mahara training to make it easier to move groups between courses. What's more, we have also create a range of fun and popular users to our course which those attending can randomly pick from a generator like http://primaryschoolict.com/random-name-selector/ - its a great ice-breaker!

Here were the users from yesterday - can you spot a few famous ones? https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/7336564/cohorts.png

Drag and drop Grouping labels quiz

Drag and drop Grouping labels quiz | Moodle and Mahara | Scoop.it

A very rushed video that shows how I made a drag and drop labels quiz activity for Science.

In the Chemical Reactions unit for soluble and insoluble, they had a worksheet that students cut labels out of to stick into a table.

I have tried to replicate this using the Drag and Drop markers feature in Moodle. This is part of a series of "add-ons" (maybe not in 2.3) from the OU.

Certainty Based Marking in Moodle

Clear explanation of Certainty Based Marking (sort of advanced negative marking). This option is now available in Moodle but the add-ons designed by Tony Gardner-Medwin at UCL look to be far more accurate and effective.

Perhaps some of the language is a little tricky for my students but I do like the idea that it makes multiple choice questions more effective and therefore more justifiable for their use in other subjects.

To download the add-ons and try out the CBM package for all Moodle types click on the link: http://www.tmedwin.net/cbm/moodle/

Now to get it added to our platform and test it out....

Ideas and advice on how to automatically issue digital badges in Moodle. Currently, they are not Open Badges but it looks like the plan is to move across to them. Developments for issuing Open Badges from Moodle to Mahara are well underway.

Creating My Moodle - Prezi by Emily Button will help you plan out a fantastic course

Here's a Prezi based presentation by Emily Button which shows her process in planning and creating a great looking, fully functional and intuitive course that students will love.

These sorts of presentation are so important to show the thought process behind course design and Emily explains her rational in a clear and thoughful manner.

I really liked her:

Blended what we teach (CONTENT) and how we teach (PEDAGOGY) using a range of different tools (TECHNOLOGY)

Can anyone tell me how she managed to make those check boxes. This isnt the Task Checklist plugin is it?

I wonder if she could autolink words to a glossary instead of download?

A super prezi too...

Lesson Starters using Moodle Quizzes - Year 7 History: The Tudors

Showcasing the use of 3 different Moodle quiz types to create starters for a Year 7 topic on Tudors.

Designed by Head of History who up until this year has never used Moodle before.

Confirms to me that the best use of Moodle is when it is in the hands of someone who is creative, innovative and wants it to work for them.

One question uses matching and the other two 3rd party plugins - Open University drag and drop features and re-ordering task feature.

Really amazing stuff. Hope I didnt sound too patronising..

Embedding Google Docs - Perins Mahara

Embedding Google Docs - Perins Mahara | Moodle and Mahara | Scoop.it

Mahara page comparing GoogleDocs added via GoogleDocs plugin and those added via an allowed iframe source using v1.6

Google presentations have come on quite a bit since I last looked at them.

I like how they play in a Mahara page and still give you some functionality and features that are not available via a simple slideshare option.

In fact Google Drive seems far more impressive than when I last looked at it. The Publish to Web options is a nice addition which I had to be told about to get these pages embedded (Thanks Anita and Dirk) :O)

gideonwilliams's insight:

What I have not added is the frustration felt when Google changes/updates its features and the existing links/methods of embedding all change. It is good that Mahara gives you a number of ways of presenting the work although the iframe embed route is one that requires some training and is not the preferred way I would like explain to students.

Many schools of course use Google as their eportfolio package with students creating web pages using Google Sites. Haven't visited sites for a while and was a little put off that the ability of students to add in a number of "science education" apps that focused more on the biological side of things! (some 3-4yrs ago)

With the explosion of app development it is good to see more options and relevant features in the forefront although I have not searched to far off the beaten track...

Why is Sites not on the navigation menu any more for Drive - disappointing.
