SkyDrive and Mahara Part 4: Can you do the same thing?

SkyDrive and Mahara Part 4: Can you do the same thing? | Moodle and Mahara | Scoop.it

So, is it possible to do the same thing with SkyDrive and Mahara?

YES!!!

I get a bit carried away in this presentation but the potential of this features is AWESOME. Has huge impact for collaborative work and sharing resources.

Also makes Mahara pages far more visual and allows students to "seamlessly" move from day to day work on Office applications to a Mahara platform.

How much potential does this have. It could be a real game changer in Moodle design with a real opportunity to create engaging, dynamic and personalised designs (and content).

More details about how to set it up at http://kb.moodlerooms.com/article/50/administrator#427

Looking forward to see some examples...

QR Moodle Orienteering Quiz

A video explaining how I linked QR codes to Moodle Quiz questions to create an orienteering challenge for my students.

Worked pretty well and has lots of potential. Am sure there are lots of improvements I could make next time but the students enjoyed it.

Students used their own phones with free QR readers. The QR codes contained hidden text messages. We are in a rural area with pretty poor reception and wireless coverage.. Students worked in pairs..

New GCSE Science Moodle Course with adapted grid format

New GCSE Science grid format
gideonwilliams's insight:

Quick video showing a design for a GCSE Biology course using Gareth Barnard's amazing grid format. Updated for Moodle 2.6 I have set it to show square images and made all the uploaded images square shape first (very important!)

The icon link design is one we use a lot of at Perins. External links are shown on a separate page. Internal links eg to downloadable files or Moodle activities are made to another topic that can be hidden from the students.

Some CSS changes made to the block. Looks not too shabby!

The Flash animations work well when you lnk to the SWF file. Nice hand tip from this location: http://www.wikihow.com/Save-Flash-Animation-from-Website

Return of the Random short -answer matching Moodle question type | Moodle Blog

Return of the Random short -answer matching Moodle question type | Moodle Blog | Moodle and Mahara | Scoop.it

In older versions of Moodle there was a question type called “Random short-answer matching” It was like the matching question type except that the answers to be matched actually came from previously made short-answer questions. It stopped working three years ago and has only just been fixed (thanks to French Moodling quiz enthusiast Jean-Michel Védrine) This week the question type has been put back into Moodle, so if you have the lastest Moodle versions, 2.5.5 and 2.6.2, you will be able to use it.

Many people however only started using Moodle recently and won’t even know of is prior existence. So this post is just to explain it and introduce it. Jean-Michel has added some detailed documentation on the Random short-answer matching question type.

If you have Moodle 2.5.5 or Moodle 2.6.2 then when you add a quiz question you will see this new type available:

There are two things to be aware of. (1) You can’t just add this question and make it there and then, like any other question type,  because you need first to have some short-answer questions pre-made and (2) those questions need to be connected in some way, share a theme.

Reality check - Open Source LMS: a costly affair - eLearning Industry | Moodle and Mahara | Scoop.it

What is the Cost of an Open Source LMS? This article is for demystifying the actual cost of Moodle - The most popular open source LMS. Article written for US business/organisations but very useful for schools, colleges, nonetheless.

gideonwilliams's insight:

Not something that should be taken lightly but then again without local expert knowledge these costs have to be borne somehow - especially at a school level.

Would be interesting to compare these costs against those of the companies who will support your VLE eg Synergy, WebAnywhere etc

This program is brilliant in its simplicity. It allows the user to take any jpeg image and add interactive regions for labels and annotations.

From labelling the structure of the Earth to explaining the

water cycle, diagrams make for great learning in the diverse classroom. The use of visuals as a teaching and learning strategy supports both student comprehension, retention and promotes communication.
