SkyDrive and Mahara Part 4: Can you do the same thing?

SkyDrive and Mahara Part 4: Can you do the same thing? | Moodle and Mahara | Scoop.it

So, is it possible to do the same thing with SkyDrive and Mahara?

YES!!!

I get a bit carried away in this presentation but the potential of this features is AWESOME. Has huge impact for collaborative work and sharing resources.

Also makes Mahara pages far more visual and allows students to "seamlessly" move from day to day work on Office applications to a Mahara platform.

FlipSnack is a flipping book software that lets you convert PDF documents into Flash page flip digital publications that you can embed into your website.
gideonwilliams's insight:

Another from the SnackTools stable. Create great ebooks that are embedded on your Mahara page.

You need to convert the page first into a pdf file. You only get 15pages with the free account by the way.

Embedding Google Docs - Perins Mahara

Embedding Google Docs - Perins Mahara | Moodle and Mahara | Scoop.it

Mahara page comparing GoogleDocs added via GoogleDocs plugin and those added via an allowed iframe source using v1.6

Google presentations have come on quite a bit since I last looked at them.

I like how they play in a Mahara page and still give you some functionality and features that are not available via a simple slideshare option.

In fact Google Drive seems far more impressive than when I last looked at it. The Publish to Web options is a nice addition which I had to be told about to get these pages embedded (Thanks Anita and Dirk) :O)

gideonwilliams's insight:

What I have not added is the frustration felt when Google changes/updates its features and the existing links/methods of embedding all change. It is good that Mahara gives you a number of ways of presenting the work although the iframe embed route is one that requires some training and is not the preferred way I would like explain to students.

Many schools of course use Google as their eportfolio package with students creating web pages using Google Sites. Haven't visited sites for a while and was a little put off that the ability of students to add in a number of "science education" apps that focused more on the biological side of things! (some 3-4yrs ago)

With the explosion of app development it is good to see more options and relevant features in the forefront although I have not searched to far off the beaten track...

Why is Sites not on the navigation menu any more for Drive - disappointing.

Allowed iframe sources - Mahara Wiki

Allowed iframe sources - Mahara Wiki | Moodle and Mahara | Scoop.it

Mahara Version 1.5 allows you to embed iframes in Mahara throught text boxes (and pasting code in the HTML option).

The installation comes with a number of standard sites pre-set up eg YouTube, Glogster, Slideshare.

This excellent page on the Mahara wiki has been set up by Dirk Meyer (who teaches Maths, Science and Computing) and lists a number of addition iframe sources that you (as an administrator) can add to your Mahara list.

He welcomes further contributions.
