Course Design: Year 7 English (Non fiction)

Course Design: Year 7 English (Non fiction) | Moodle and Mahara | Scoop.it

Playing about with new course design for Moodle for English department. The CADR is part of the 5 form lesson structure.

What you see is essentially 3 separate Moodle labels. Rather than make up a simple title, I have added a heading and table.

Took ages to get the table design right. To create the box appearance I had to make extra "blank" columns between each section. The Moodle text editor can be quite trying!

Of course how good this looks depends on individual users resolutions and devices.

There is a summary of the task in the text and students click on the icon to see the detail. This could be an image (Saved PowerPoint file as PNG) or link to a Moodle activity etc.

The icon set are meant to reflect some form of Blooms-ish taxonomy. The full set are here: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/7336564/MOODLE/iconstogether.png

The course layout is "One Topic" and all the key files are on a "Teachers Only" tab which is hidden from students. One topic and Grid format are my personal favourites.

Blooms Sheet for Students book

Blooms Sheet for Students book | Moodle and Mahara | Scoop.it

I made a Blooms Taxonomy poster to fit on one side of A4 to go inside student's booklets as an aide memoire for our work with Mahara in English and getting students to recognise higher order thinking skills in submitted work.

Feel free to borrow and adapt. The link is https://dl.dropbox.com/u/7336564/BLOOMS/poster.doc

Blooms Icons - Evidencing Mahara work

Blooms Icons - Evidencing Mahara work | Moodle and Mahara | Scoop.it

A list of Blooms icons in tag format (150 x 80) - download from my Dropbox as PNG file.

When students upload work to Mahara they have to provide a text box explaining the task. Students can attach the tags to show what Higher Order skill they think the task was completed to.

Will link in to our work on PuML Moodle course. Icons will sit in Moodle as we have single sign on so makes it easy to link to.

Designing a Practical Task in Moodle

Designing a Practical Task in Moodle | Moodle and Mahara | Scoop.it
gideonwilliams's insight:

We wanted to create an activity on Moodle that students could follow when doing a practical task rather than simply have a blank. It was also a challenge to those who kept saying what about practical subjects on Moodle etc etc.

The design is a label made up of a table with various cells marged. The CADR icons on the left handside represent our 4 form approach to lessons. I designed them to look a little like elements on the periodic table. The top left icon is the Science icon on the navigation menu (not quite right yet).

The features for each section represent our attempts to created a personalised model of learning with a range of (higher order thinking) activities. The text gives a brief explanation of the task but students actually click on the icons to download/view the tasks.

The design elements could be a bit better but limited by my expertise and Moodle's text editor.
