MOOC MOOC! The interview

MOOC MOOC! The interview | #MOOCMOOC | Scoop.it

by Jessica Knott.

Rarely does a MOOC strike fear into the heart of its participants. Interestingly, in this case I mean the MOOC itself, not the content. MOOC MOOC, a MOOC about MOOCs (MOOC! Sorry, I just wanted to say it once more, as I didn’t feel I had worked enough instances of the word MOOC into the sentence) offered challenges and learning, exploring the MOOC phenomenon in an interesting, creative way.

Confession: I'm not an unabashed fan of online classes. They don't work in all cases, with all students, or for all teachers, and when they're done badly, they really fail.

MOOC MOOC: Dark Underbelly; or, How a Cave Troll Can Help Revise the Syllabus of Education | #MOOCMOOC | Scoop.it

For some, a hashtag chat is pure chaos. For others, it’s an exhilarating gathering of minds. Either way, the act of conversing using Twitter hashtags is an innovation in how we make connections, parse information, and participate in learning and professional networks. It is precisely this kind of social learning that permeates “The History and Future of (Mostly) Higher Education”.

Autism, Hackers, and the Future of Higher Education – #FutureEd - Blogs - The Chronicle of Higher Education | #MOOCMOOC | Scoop.it

As a graduate student in Professor Davidson’s “History and Future of Higher Education” course and a teaching assistant in her similarly titled MOOC, I am interacting with more than 17,000 participants online and encountering them in a surprisingly personal way. Recently, a 19-year-old MOOC participant who self-identified as ADHD and a “hacker of his education” wondered in an online forum why we were dealing with higher education specifically. It is a good and valid question, one that resonates with me deeply and personally. I have two sons with autism.

MOOCagogy: Assessment, Networked Learning, and the Meta-MOOC | Online Learning | HYBRID PEDAGOGY | #MOOCMOOC | Scoop.it

Instruction does not equate to learning. This is the fundamental fly in the ointment of instructional design, and the epistemological failing of learning management systems and most MOOC platforms. Learning, unfortunately, is something no instruction has ever quite put its finger on, and something that no methodology or approach can guarantee. Instead, pedagogical praxis creates roads along which learning may take place (along with plenty of other experiences); and assessment is merely a system of checkpoints along the way to evaluate how well the road, the vehicle, and the driver are cooperating. In other words, assessment doesn’t measure learning. Assessment measures the design of the instruction.
