Most recently, Professor Noor taught that MOOC and at the same time adapted his on-campus class into a flipped version where the Duke University undergraduates followed along while the masses of people around the world were in the MOOC, and the Duke students were doing that as their homework, and then they would come to the lecture hall for small group work.

timokos's curator insight, June 19, 2013 4:09 AM

John Daniels take on the impact of Technology and MOOCs on (online) Higher Education.

“Technology revolutionizes higher education by allowing us simultaneously to increase access, improve quality and cut costs. Today’s innovations, such as inexpensive tablets, rapidly expanding worldwide connectivity, mobile devices and open educational resources (OER) are giving the revolution a great boost. Today, access to higher education is potentially Universal.”

“Online education means 3Cs: choice, convenience and (low) cost. Learners can pick from many MOOCs – just the tip of the online iceberg. They can study where, when and how they like. Although free MOOCs don’t give credit, plenty of low-cost credit courses are available online.”

“Higher education is being ‘unbundled’. Learners can find their content as OER on the Web, choose one institution to provide mentoring, and have another assess them for credit and credentials. Accrediting agencies are adapting to unbundling, but learners must become canny shoppers – and can find great bargains!”

TK: I’m not sure when this article was published, but the first MOOCs for credit are already here! Will be a competitive time for all providers (public & private) when prices drop significantly (e.g. Georgia Tech offering a master degree program in Computer Science for 7000 dollar).

A leading platform for the popular "massive open online courses" offered by elite universities is moving forward into a new realm: the expansive field of continuing education for teachers.
Sicsic Jérémie's insight:

Coursera, the California-based for-profit platform for MOOCs from 62 leading universities such as Stanford, Princeton and the University of Pennsylvania, planned to announce Wednesday a new range of partners that include education schools and, in a first, non-degree granting institutions such as the American Museum of Natural History that help train teachers.

MOOCs, Courseware, and the Course as an Artifact -

MOOCs, Courseware, and the Course as an Artifact - | MOOC Design | Scoop.it

In some ways, the xMOOC in its current form is this trend to turn the course into an artifact taken to its logical conclusion (possibly ad absurdum). Course lectures are now artifacts in the form of videos. Assignment and assessment functions are packaged into machine-graded tools. Certification of knowledge is provided by the machines as well. Yes, there are still class discussions, and yes, the course instructors do participate sometimes, but they appear to be rather secondary in most of the xMOOC course designs I have looked at. In general, xMOOCs tend to explore the degree to which the pedagogical function can be fulfilled by artifacts.1
