Academic Word List: vocabulary exercises for EFL/ESL learners

Academic Word List: vocabulary exercises for EFL/ESL learners | MOOC4teachers | Scoop.it
Vocabulary Exercises for the AWL

This site now contains 285 gap-fill exercises to review and recycle the general word families contained within the AWL. These exercises can be found on each Sublist page. Gap-fill exercises are an excellent way to recycle vocabulary through different contexts and can be used to broaden the student's understanding of the range of meaning of vocabulary. The online format of the exercises allows students to get immediate feedback on their answers. Students can work throughfive different exercises for each word family in the AWL. Many of these exercises include different derivations (parts of speech) for the given word. Students are encouraged to complete the exercises for a given level before proceeding to the next level.

Hacktivity Kits for Webmaking

Hacktivity Kits for Webmaking | MOOC4teachers | Scoop.it

Description by EdSurge

" HACKTIVITY KITS is a collection of nine hands-on and web 2.0 activities intended to explain and reinforce the concept of web hacking -- that is, the idea of remixing, reusing, and re-purposing existing content to create new material or glean interesting insights. Created by NYC HIVE, a MacArthur Foundation-supported group of civic-minded organizations (there's a Chicago one, too), the Hacktivity Kits are largely built upon Mozilla WebMaker tools: Popcorn Maker, Thimble, and X-Ray Goggles. Each Hacktivity includes a detailed list of learning goals and objectives, expected results, and supporting resources. There's also an extensive list of icebreakers to get the creative juices flowing and skills tutorials for the WebMaker tools. For example, look to the Online Storytelling kit which explains the SVT (Story, Vision, Tech) model for making "web native" stories. In addition to introductory tutorials on how to use the kit and associated technology, there's also the Spectrogram icebreaker, Popcorn Maker deep-dive, and an out-of-the-box design challenge for teachers just getting their feet wet."

How to Raise Mindful Children in a Digital World | Psychology Today

How to Raise Mindful Children in a Digital World | Psychology Today | MOOC4teachers | Scoop.it

By Jim Taylor

"In a previous post, I asked the question: “Is technology making your children mindless instead of mindful?” I think it’s safe to say that it is incredibly difficult for children to be mindful, present, and calm in our culture that is now dominated by the constant flow of information.

"Yet, if you want your children to be truly happy, you must give them opportunities to experience mindfulness. In this crazy new world of technology, what a wonderful lifelong gift you give your children when you help them to, paraphrasing a well-known adage from the 1960s counterculture movement, to “turn off and tune in.” You do this by creating regular opportunities for your children to disconnect from technology.

"You can start by looking at your children’s lives and seeing all the times when they’re “mindless,” meaning they’re being overwhelmed by information, distracted, and drawn outside of themselves. You will likely find that this state of mind dominates their daily lives."

Ivon Prefontaine's curator insight, February 8, 2013 8:04 PM

This is part of my dissertation topic. What can we do, as adults, to help our children and students navigate the digital waters. They will not subside, but we can help with our own mindful behaviours.

6 Easy Pieces v1

By Darren Kuropatwa

"Slides to support an active learning workshop for student teachers at Brandon University. 16 January 2013.

"6 different lightweight ideas/activities you can implement in your classes tomorrow to leverage mobile (and stationary) technology to document student learning and foster reflective ways for students to share what they're learning. We don't just talk about them, we do them. Then we talk about them and how each of us might practically adapt these ideas in our own classrooms.

"Basically, we have fun, play with practical ideas that allow teachers to easily incorporate technology in their classroom daily, and leverage some of the mobile technologies that are increasingly found in students' pockets. Six Easy Pieces is an accessible introduction to the fundamentals of using technology in the classroom."

10 Great Writing iPad Apps for Teachers and Students ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning

10 Great Writing iPad Apps for Teachers and Students ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning | MOOC4teachers | Scoop.it

By Med Kharbach

"It is amazing how fast the iTunes app store is growing, no sooner does an app appear then it becomes outdated. It seems like app developers outnumber customers and this is a good thing for us because with the growing competition comes enhanced productivity. However, searching for educational apps to use or recommend for your kids and students is not an easy task and the abundance of apps does not mean anything out there does what its developers claim. Prudence is highly warranted in your selections. This is one reason why I share lists of educational apps with you here. I know not everyone of you has got the time to sift through the bundles of apps there. That being said, today Educational Technology and Mobile Learning has curated for you a new and updated list of some awesome writing apps. Check it out below and don't forget to share with us your feedback. Enjoy"
