Moocs may create a global trail of failed business schools

Moocs may create a global trail of failed business schools | MOOCs | Scoop.it

The Mooc (massive open online course) phenomenon is having a significant impact on higher education – especially business education.

In less than two years, close to 100 leading universities and business schools have launched 450 costly Moocs and enrolled almost 5m students. Involving Wall Street and Silicon Valley as partners in these ventures, these business schools are changing the rules of competition. But they are doing so at the cost of eliminating their peers.

Those elite schools that are launching Moocs are creating a new standard for business education, in the same way they did with the case study teaching method decades ago.

Fiona Harvey's insight:

'A significant impact on Higher Education' not sure about that.  A new standard also not sure about.  However, I have placed this article here  as a marker of change in tone (from hype to impact)

I agree Fiona.  It seems to me that this is a phenomena looking for a life-cycle to feel a part of.  A bit like wanting to be in the cool kids club :)

It found that more men than women studied for Moocs – with a male to female gender ratio of 64:36, while the majority of students (22%) lived in the United States.
Fiona Harvey's insight:

Study reveals that the average MOOC learner is male over 30 with a college degree and living in the USA.  Futurelearns own data reveals this.  Not much call for UG level or transitional type programmes. University of Southampton mooc leaRobert quoted.

Changing Course: Ten Years of Tracking Online Education in the United States

Babson Survey Research Group and Quahog Research Group, LLC.

This publication, Changing Course: Ten Years of Tracking Online Education in the United States, is the tenth annual report in this series. The report series was initially known as the Sloan Online Survey in recognition of our founding sponsor the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. The Foundation saw the need for the first of these reports and continued that commitment for eight years. The Sloan Foundation supported an independent study with full privacy for all respondents as well as free distribution of all report publications.

Fiona Harvey's insight:

Pearson and the Sloan consortium - report with comparisons from their survey in 2002 over what has changed in online learning.  Lots on the impact of MOOCs and attitudes towards online learning v campus based education.

Fiona Harvey's insight:
In the UK, universities own anything produced on their time. However, in the case of MOOCs it's seemed to be that it's a way of showcasing content via academics and no one has (yet) tried to stop their content appearing once they've moved

More On MOOCs: Could be Useful for Lawyers and Law Students ... | MOOCs | Scoop.it
Last month, we talked MOOCs: Massive Online Open Courses. Yale announced that it would offer a Constitutional Law course for free through Coursera and it piqued our interest, as it seems like a good way for John Q.
Fiona Harvey's insight:

I like this - lawyers and MOOCs and recognising that sometimes , although they may know their subject they just can't teach for toffees!   the lawyers I know who teach are brilliant though, so it'd work both ways. A MOOC could showcase excellent teachers to inspire those who are a little 'dry' as is mentioned here.

Still Questioning the Model
Inside Higher Ed
For Cornell, Princeton and Yale Universities, MOOCs represents a shiny new toy in the toolbox that is their online education offerings.
Fiona Harvey's insight:

Examples of more practical thinking towards why the MOOC model and questions over who owns content and how it should be used.

Yale are entering into the sphere with 4 MOOCs and they're using them with the goal if improving the on  campus experience .

There is also mention of institutional ownership with  links to policies.
