Rationale for UCLeXtend; opening up UCL Moodle | UCL E-Learning Environments team blog | MOOCs | Scoop.it
Fiona Harvey's insight:

Not Futurelearn but UCL eXtend.  This was mentioned at the ALTMOOCSIG conference in Jun.   Interesting to see what happens without the massive (they are not that bothered about the scale)  but if thats the case, then will they not just be free online courses.  I don't think people make use of the massive.

Arthur Correia's curator insight, October 1, 5:31 PM

Another type of approach, not necessarily for free but a new welcome path in the e-learning revolution. The more alternatives provided by the e-learning agents the better. Everyone gains from this. I don't think this has to be a way against MOOCs. There's plenty of space in the online Academia world !

SAPVoice: Higher Education In The Digital Age: MOOCs -- Insidious Threat Or Incredible Breakthrough? | MOOCs | Scoop.it
Massive online open courses (MOOCs) are threatening to knock higher education off its traditional autonomous hill with a far more flexible and accessible learning mode than anyone could ever imagine.
Fiona Harvey's insight:

The last line says it all.  'The students are already there'.

Need to look at the private companies that are offering MOOCs - SAP course has a much higher completion rate than academia.

Chris Macrae's curator insight, August 8, 2013 8:38 AM

Over 40 years, Entrepreneurial Revolution research has identified 4 educational monopolies that have made students the main losers of education. MOOCs can breakthrough all 4 of these monopolies. It would surprise me if more than 10 % of professors want to use moocs to free every job creating possibility the net generation could be enjoying with today's extraordinary collaboration technology http://normanmacrae.ning.com/profiles/blogs/collaborate-in-entrepreneurial-revolution-of-pro-youth-economics

Jump Off the Coursera Bandwagon - Commentary - The Chronicle of Higher Education

Jump Off the Coursera Bandwagon - Commentary - The Chronicle of Higher Education | MOOCs | Scoop.it

The start-up company is capitalizing on a lemming-like rush among elite colleges, but all it offers is the massification of education.

Fiona Harvey's insight:

He has a point, drill'em and grill 'em approach from Coursera and XMOOC providers is not how we should be teaching but we are tempted by the big names.  I see this as the beginning of developing our models of online learning

It's not that I consider MOOCs to generally be a bad idea; it's just that I think we should be more critical of them. Many are rushing into MOOCs without considering the class, societal and cultural issues inherent in their adoption ...

Fiona Harvey's insight:

Commentary on how MOOCs are hyped and we should be more crtical of them.  Refers to failings of both cMOOC and xMOOC - could be useful for discussion.

MOOCs as textbooks for flipped classrooms - a business model

“RT @robinwb: MOOTS? #MOOCs as Textbooks http://t.co/oQTlyAgxIM”;
Fiona Harvey's insight:
I'm not sure of the idea of a mooc as a text book - neither the idea that institutions pay a fee, they could then insist on influencing content. Maybe if students paid a small amount, if you can keep the massive it'd make money. Otherwise elitist institutions get back access to content they had already

Learn About Self-Control, Racism, Gender, Much More: Introducing Self-Paced Open Courseware (SPOC) | HASTAC | MOOCs | Scoop.it
Fiona Harvey's insight:

I like the idea of this, but I still think that there should be something else around connecting with others.  Just having a discussion about something is very difficult with inspiration (and I can talk on just about anything!)  I don't know what this needs and I love the idea.  Maybe when I have 'time' I will do one of these for longer, I just dipped my toe in to see what it was like, but its interesting none the less.

Moocs: if we're not careful so-called 'open' courses will close minds

Moocs: if we're not careful so-called 'open' courses will close minds | MOOCs | Scoop.it
Massive open online courses, or Moocs, are likely to offer 'higher education for the masses' with fewer teachers, says Peter Scott
Fiona Harvey's insight:

I think this is an inaccurate piece but I include it here because of the comments.  Much more insightful than the author.  Thats why I love social media - your comments are important!  The comments are a great example of why MOOCs are interesting and can be useful, and if Peter Scott reads them he might understand more about the value of MOOCs.
