5 lessons for all education learned from MOOCs.
Fiona Harvey's insight:

Lessons from MOOCs - the story so far. I think he has missed out that, at least for the UK, MOOCs are a trojan horse for showing the potential of learning online, So for hybrid or blended learning, they can benefit on campus students (which is what I thought the point of the moocs would be, for all the investment, both time and money)

New e-Literate TV Series on MOOCs - e-Literate

New e-Literate TV Series on MOOCs - e-Literate | MOOCs | Scoop.it
If 2013 was the year that MOOC mania peaked in the Gartner hype cycle, then surely 2014 is the year in which they have entered the trough of disillusionment. And just as it was important last year to push back … Continue reading →

Greenwich Connect's curator insight, April 28, 2014 5:39 AM

Are we really in a "trough of disillusionment" with MOOCs? Yes we are starting to learn what works, what doesn't work, which areas need to be improved, developing pedagogical approaches, etc. But despite their current shortcomings we still sense a feeling of optimism around MOOCs, and excitement for what they may become. This is different to the hyped up "peak of inflated expectations" - mass hysteria about unprecedented access to higher education, hundreds of thousands of students and superstar professors. It is more of a cautious but solid enthusiasm, combined with a committed rolling up of sleeves - a determination to explore and experiment with open online learning in a variety of forms. This, rather than disillusionment, is what we see in this series of videos from e-Literate TV. Well worth a watch.

Wilko Dijkhuis's curator insight, April 28, 2014 6:59 AM

Changing Course: Ten Years of Tracking Online Education in the United States

Babson Survey Research Group and Quahog Research Group, LLC.

This publication, Changing Course: Ten Years of Tracking Online Education in the United States, is the tenth annual report in this series. The report series was initially known as the Sloan Online Survey in recognition of our founding sponsor the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. The Foundation saw the need for the first of these reports and continued that commitment for eight years. The Sloan Foundation supported an independent study with full privacy for all respondents as well as free distribution of all report publications.

Fiona Harvey's insight:

Pearson and the Sloan consortium - report with comparisons from their survey in 2002 over what has changed in online learning.  Lots on the impact of MOOCs and attitudes towards online learning v campus based education.

Fiona Harvey's insight:

This is really what its all about for those of us involved in on campus learning.  Interesting that they mention the measures of success as being 'how much more of the course did you get through than you thought you would?' rather than did you complete the course.

Engaged Learning in MOOCs: a study using the UK Engagement Survey

Fiona Harvey's insight:

I have great respect for Julie Wintrup and Kelly Wakefield with their work on student engagement (see RAISE network) - this report in collaboration with the HEA provides some valuable research for engagement but it would be interesting to see how this develops.  It mentions assessment as a form of engagement - but our moocs are not assessed. Perhaps this means that we may be assessing in the future.

MOOCs: Too Much Hype or Not Enough? - Pearson Research & Innovation Network

MOOCs: Too Much Hype or Not Enough? - Pearson Research & Innovation Network | MOOCs | Scoop.it
Are MOOCs over-hyped and dying?
Fiona Harvey's insight:

I scooped this one because I am running a workshop with a group from Saudi Arabia.  However, I have already been told that MOOCs are not that popular in KSA, and it appears that this conference also played them down.  As an aside, the hype came from media and commentators who I think, didn't really understand online learning.

The idea that you can give away content and learning for free isn't going away.  I'm glad MOOCs stirred up attention for learning and using the web to get it.
