Rationale for UCLeXtend; opening up UCL Moodle | UCL E-Learning Environments team blog | MOOCs | Scoop.it
Fiona Harvey's insight:

Not Futurelearn but UCL eXtend.  This was mentioned at the ALTMOOCSIG conference in Jun.   Interesting to see what happens without the massive (they are not that bothered about the scale)  but if thats the case, then will they not just be free online courses.  I don't think people make use of the massive.

Arthur Correia's curator insight, October 1, 5:31 PM

Another type of approach, not necessarily for free but a new welcome path in the e-learning revolution. The more alternatives provided by the e-learning agents the better. Everyone gains from this. I don't think this has to be a way against MOOCs. There's plenty of space in the online Academia world !

If Even the Genius Godfather of MOOCs Can’t Make Them Work, Can Anyone? | MOOCs | Scoop.it
Sebastian Thrun, godfather of the massive open online course, has quietly spread a plastic tarp on the floor, nudged his most famous educational invention into the center, and is about to pull the trigger.
Fiona Harvey's insight:

He is a lovely Computer Scientist.  People are probably not his tihng. Think we need to look at the bigger picture.  They don't work as a stand alone passive model where we shove information at them.  But they have worked when we have been able to facilitate the learning.,  Robots learn by transmission. People learn from getting together, sharing and learning with other people.

If only we knew how to do that...

Coursera 'Learning Hubs' bring a social layer to online education

Coursera 'Learning Hubs' bring a social layer to online education | MOOCs | Scoop.it
People who sign up for courses in a number of cities will be offered physical spaces to access the Internet, while learning alongside their peers.
Fiona Harvey's insight:

Learning hubs are meetings or study groups.  Looks like Coursera may even employ people to get these groups up and running. (not sure if that would be authentic though?)

Martin Bean, Vice-Chancellor Open University, on Futurelearn | MOOCs | Scoop.it

Martin Bean talks in depth about Futurelearn and its plans to offer free open online courses (MOOCs) with UK universities

Fiona Harvey's insight:

VC of the OU explains why Futurelearn was created. This is a chance for the UK to create a hybrid of the xMOOC and cMOOC (perhaps) but we will have to wait and see. What I've seen so far it's more on the xMOOC pathway with a smattering of cMOOC. Early days.

8 Most Popular free Online learning Platforms – Take Free Courses

Online learning Courses: There are for-profit and not-for-profit online learning Universities and Academies offering free and/or affordable online learning courses that are worth considering.

Fiona Harvey's insight:

Includes results of the Canvas Network MOOCs.  Interesting because we don't hear much from them. Some of this is obvious (to me) that people are taking the courses because they are interested in the topic.

Top Free Classes's curator insight, April 26, 2013 4:09 AM

"Coursolve is a new platform that aims to match nonprofits, small businesses, research labs, and other organizations with courses to empower students to solve real-world problems. Students in massively open online courses (MOOCs) offered through Coursera, Udacity, edX, and other platforms are forming online learning communities of unprecedented sizes. We aim to work with course professors to engage these learning communities and meet the needs of resource-strapped organizations such as nonprofits, research labs, and small businesses." Such partnerships are a great opportunity for service-learning and experiential learning. "Introduction to Data Science" by UW that starts on coursera on May 1st is one of such courses.

Mary Jo Windley's curator insight, May 23, 2013 1:45 PM

The attack of the MOOCs | The Economist, Higher Education

An army of new online courses is scaring the wits out of traditional universities. But can they find a viable business model?

Via Peter B. Sloep, Peter Bryant

Business models are appearing - Coursera announced this week that they have made $1million on their Signature track (although this pales into insignificance against their investors $66 million) Better than nothing though!  Interesting article though.

Gabi Witthaus's curator insight, August 22, 2013 4:04 AM

Good commentary by Peter Sloep: "This concise article contains little news for those who keep up to date on MOOC developments. However, it still is useful in that it only takes on the question of whether (higher) education with MOOCs can be turned into a viable business. This is revealing, both in that the Economist concludes that the verdict is still out on that question and in that no single sentence is devoted to the question of whether this is a good idea in the first place."
